light smoke from 4110 in cold weather

I am accustomed to seeing some smoke for a few minutes at start up in cold weather(below freezing), but last night I could some in the light beams from my aux. lighting the whole time I was working. It was actually a little warmer last night (34 degrees) and there was no wind. It did not smell noticibly stronger than usual, but I was a little concerned.

My "Opinion" its normal, the lights spotlighted the smoke you don't see during the day. Its happened to me when running at night. Did you notice any loss of engine power, then you might have a problem. also, Keep an eye on the engine oil, if you notice oil consumption, then you got a problem.

Thanks for the reply, No loss in power. It has been a couple weeks since I have checked the oil (about five hours run time) so I will check it tomorrow before I use it. I have also asked coworkers today and everyone agrees that it is most likely normal as you said.

Funny you should mention this subject. I was REALLY worried about my tractor after I started it up in cold weather this week. It smoked farily heavily for a few seconds after startup

Then today (in the sixties) it didn't smoke at all on startup. I am new to diesel engines, and didn't know until I asked someone that this isn't uncommon for tractors to do in cold weather.

I wouldn't worry about a diesel smoking, as that is the nature of a diesel engine. Sometimes they smoke more on startup in cold weather because you have to crank them more to try to get them started, and while doing this you add more fuel to the mix, which has to go somewhere on startup.

To get better cold weather starts you probably need to add some kind of warmer/heater to the engine.
