Yes, the options are "freebies". However, the options have a strike price which determines how much you might make or lose when your option becomes available. So, if the strike price is $20 a share and a year later those shares become available to your to exercise. If the current price is $21 a share, you can exercise your option and sell to make a buck a share (minus taxes and transaction fees), buy the shares outright ( you need to come up with $20 a share to purchase), or sit on them. Currently, tech stocks have gone south and, well, are worthless if you hold options.

Luckily, a couple of months ago I decided that buying a Kubota was a better investment than the stock market. Boy am I glad I did that!
I have enough left over to build a 30x56 pole barn. I went the cheap route - using metal for roofing and siding.
