So, this is a bit of a thought experiment, but relevant to newbies like me. I know my home boss will never agree to all of the toys I would buy. This is why we actually have money. Lol.

So, assume A generic person in the South (meaning no snow to speak of) just got A generic midrange compact tractor with a regular duty FEL.

What 4 attachments would be most useful and why? Assume mixed used on 10-20 acres. I know, a lot of variables. What I am looking for, I guess, is the multitask ers.

The use cases need to be defined with more detail. Likely you'll get a wide range of responses.

Something to mow with as a minimum...

That could be a rotary mower (brush hog) to clean up scrub or keep weeds knocked down, or a finish mower if you're looking for smooth.

I still find it amazing that one can order 1,000 pound implements on a credit card via the internet and have them show up five or six days later in my driveway.

Looking for multi-task implements too. The only option I have found (for light duty, not serious farming) is getting a tool bar. With this, you could have several different types of attachments. I have inherited a 2" diamond (solid bar) one with a single plow. I have not bought the clamps that would permit mounting other implements yet, but still researching. Otherwise, as far as I know, you'd have to buy separate implements.
For me :
1.) box blade, can do some ripping up / leveling.
2.) 3-point sprayer
3.) Could name many I would "like" to have, but other than my hay spear... dont really "need" anything else.

I agree with previous poster as to more detail on the land and jobs you hope to perform. Being in heavily wooded acres or scrub open land makes a big difference. Do you plan on much gardening?...tree removal?...lawn vs field mowing etc ? I'd skip the ballast box, in any case, on open spaces.....any 3 pt implement can serve that purpose

I'd go with 1. some kinda of mower 2. Pallet forks with QA 3. Box Blade (biggest one) 4. Landscape rake

Cheers,
Mike

Agree with above, I'm in southern hurricane country on a bit over 6 acres.

Pallet Forks
Box Blade
Grapple

Stump Grinder, depending on how wooded/overgrown your lot is and if you experience a lot of storm tree damage
Landscape rake if not a lot of tree debris

Beyond those 4 recommendations, additionally I have a pine straw rake, rotary cutter and an IBC tote used as a person lift with the pallet forks.

1. Something to mow with, type depending on your situation.
2. If you have a gravel driveway to maintain, a rear blade.

Nothing else unless you have a specific need.

Pallet forks and grapples have their fans, but are of little use to most people.

Pallet forks and a box blade are going to be the norm on what ever size and type of property you have with 1ac+. The rest is to property dependent to say.

Some may say a landscape rake but I have gone many many months with out useing mine. Never use the balist box any more and the carry all isnt as usefull as I thought.

The box blade prety much stays on one tractor at all times and the pallet forks havent left one loader in about 4yrs.

List some specific task you foresee doing and describe the 10-20 acres in more detail!
While as you have it listed you will get lots of suggestions, usefulness is questionable at best!
10-20 acres of woods calls for very different attachments/implements than 10-20 acres of truck crop farming.
1 example. A tiller nit likely to see much use in woods but most valuable if planting crops to harvest and sell.

It’s like asking “what food do I like?” Guessing game. For over 50 years my tastes have continued to change.

My personal uses, like others have said yours mat vary.

1. FEL with bucket and pallet forks.
2. Ballast box and loaded tires. A must if you have number 1.
3. Mid mount mower. It’s my main lawn mower.
4. Rear blade, mainly for snow removal but I do use it for gravel grading also.
5. Large cone 3 point fertilizer spreader. I usually use it once or twice a year to do the yard.
6. 3 point sprayer. I have on that holds 35 gallons will broadcast spray and has a wand. I use this for weeds in the yard.
7. Brush hog. I use this to beat back the brush around the edge of my yard.

I know both have their fans, but I've lived on a 12-acres, mixed woods and field, and hilly, for 25 years and never found a use for either.

Break plow, disc, cultivator. Should have those. Now let's get the other four. Bush Hog sounds good. Forks handy. Box blade. I'm so so on a grapple. We have one but if I'm ripping trees up I want the forks. I'm meaning 8 inches or under. We also made a rake deal with 1 x 4 inch solid teeth. That's a neat item to clean up with. It's 8' long. And 7' wide.

What does your land look like?

Why? That assumes he's going to break ground for some crop, but he never said that. I have a parcel the size the OP mentions, and have a single bottom plow that's not been used in 15 years, never owned a disk or cultivator, and sold my tiller five years ago. I hadn't used it since the deer forced us to move the garden to a small plot and fence it so I can't get the tractor in.

Fact is, there's really no way to make a sensible recommendation without knowing what he plans to do with the land.

Thanks for the replies so far. I was trying to make this generic as possible. Limit to 4 attachments and explain why. Remember the goal is to use 4 attachments to do the most possible jobs. FEL is a freebie.

For my personal situation, my avatar photo is my land. The is a shot down my future driveway. Mostly pines with some large sections of utility easements that will need mowing. We will have no traditional lawn. Maybe a small garden. Tree thinning. Fruit and/or Christmas trees. Gravel/stone driveway. Fencing work. Wife wants a few chickens and we will have a couple of large dogs. GSD and Golden.

For me the #1 implement is a PTO chipper. I use it for brush and tree parts.
If you're going to need to move dirt a box blade works a lot better than the loader bucket. Also good for grading roads.
If you need to mow easements or fields or anything except lawn you will want a rough mower, either a rotary cutter or a flail mower.

Do you already own the 10-20 acres?
Does the "home boss" really think the tractor and attachments are merely "toys"?

Those issues aside, when I was in the same position 20 years ago, I figured mowing, dirt work and tree clearing were my main priorities. For mowing, 6 ft. cutter. Dirt work, toothbar on FEL, backhoe and boxblade. Trees, pallet forks for the FEL. Other attachments followed over time.

Everyone's situation is unique of course.
