When starting up my G3033 the other morning it was about 48 degrees. The tractor started but ran like it wasnt firing on all three cylinders and it was idling at 450 RPM and would not change RPM no matter what i did to the throttle. After about a minute it idled right on up and ran normally. Edited to add I only have 16 hours on my tractor.

I dont have a manual so i was wondering if this was some sort of cold start routine .

Thanks Guys

Mark

Sure sounds like cold ambient issue. Fuel flow is no issue (with straight No. 2) until about 25 deg. F, so it is a function of the engine combustion & injection design. I'm pretty sure an older engine won't have a pre-heater (intake grid heater or individual cylinder glow plugs), so it is what it is. If there is any chance in storing it in an area you can heat the air, that will help immensely.

Another idea is to clean out the fuel injection system with a reliable cleaner - help clean the injector nozzles to improve fuel spray pattern & size.

My opinion --- no, it's not normal. Did you let the glow plugs complete their cycle before starting it??

I have never experienced that. I would think that it's NOT normal. I think these throttles are not electronic, but straight wire... Therefore I would think you could manipulate any controlled idle "cold start" routine that the machine would perform by adjusting the throttle.

I wonder if an injector or fuel line was clogged, keeping fuel intake low until the clog clears?

I guess the easy way to tell that is if it does it just randomly, or every cold start.

My LS manual says: Start in cold weather

Push the throttle lever to the middle position of full throttle

Start the engineafter cold start indicator goes OFF (if fitted)

If the engine runs rough, press the throttle down 2-3 times for a while. (mechanical type)

If engine runs smoothly, carry out the warm-up for 5-10 minutes at about 1500 rpm.

Use the engine oil for winter in cold weather.

Use the diesel for winter when it is very cold weather. It is much easier to start engine.

This is not true with the Ultra Low Sulfur of today... Its closer to 32 now.

Ah yes, BUT remember - we, as Americans, must cut point for the rest of the world in the war to save the planet from mankind's 'death-wish' of irresponsible resource consumption and what-not; you DO have a brick in your toilet tank ....... right?

On any older diesel, you need to give it some throttle when cold. This was the case on our 220D, 240D and on my 4010. When really cold, they needed about 1/2 throttle. You just run the throttle back when they start to achieve 1,000-1,500 rpm. Newer diesels start almost like gasoline engines.

I don't understand how severely hydrotreated USLD can have a higher cloud point temperature than previous LSD? How can USLD have more wax in it?

When starting in very cold conditions (-20 to -35 C), I will allow the glow plugs to cycle once, then start the engine with the throttle up slightly. As soon as it starts, I turn the key slightly to re-cycle the glow plugs. That usually smooths the engine out within a few seconds and it will run normally afterwards. I always let it warm for at least 5 minutes, but aim for 15 when it's that cold.

Your temperatures don't call for winter diesel yet and shouldn't be an issue for smooth starting. Are you sure your glow plugs are heating? It sounds more like a glow plug issue to me. Try my trick next time, if the engine doesn't smooth out right away, I'd really look to make sure the glow plugs are energizing. Lots of threads on TBN about the issue.
