limiting Cylinder stroke

I have a 1.5" X 8" cylinder I need to limit the travel down to 6.33", Someone said to open the end and place something around the rod that would at as a stop and limit the travel to the precis length. Will this work? I like the ideal of it being inside out of sight and harms way, what should I use i hate to damage the rod or inside walls of the cylinder.

Idealy you should get a cylinder with the correct stoke or use a stop valve to cut off flow to the cylinder when it reach's it's desired length.

Is this going on a log splitter or something that you could change the mounting location, or is it like a backhoe swing cylinder where it "needs" to fit? Yes, to answer your question, you can open up cylinder and add spacer to shorten stroke. A piece of pipe that will slip over rod with washers welded on end to make a spool will probably work. A hydraulic cylinder repair shop can probably fix you up. If you do it yourself, you might as well replace seal and piston packing while you are in there. Another option would be to just cut the required amount off of cyl. rod and weld end back on. You don't say where your located, but Hannon Hydraulics in Dallas might have something on their website that may help. They are in most large metropolitan cities (I think). Might give them a call.

I would agree with cutting the rod shorter and rewelding the end.

You can buy (or make) sleeves of different lengths that fit around the rod that limits travel. Any hydraulic shop, TSC, Surplus Center, Agri-Supply has them. They are only a few bucks each.

Actually it's a Hydro Assist steering cylinder on a Jeep. The company that sells them recommends putting a stop inside the cylinder to limit travel, that way when or if you change axles you can modify or remove the stop if the new axle has a longer steering throw. I just didn't want to put something inside that would damage the cylinder wall or rod.

Most hydraulic shops can fix this problem in a jiffy. We have a small one here that does stuff like that very reasonable(and i am cheap!!) You won't even have to get your hands dirty.

I spoke with a friend that is going to turn down a piece of aluminum round stock the length i need ans drill a hole in it to slide over the rod inside the cylinder. I don't see why this shouldn't work.
