Linear actuators aren't built for shock loads. If i try the toplink project, i may try incorporating some sort of heavy spring or other bumper.

That's a good idea. If I already had the actuator, as you do, I know I would do it. But I don't so I'll do the conventional route when the time comes. But it's good to know someone else thought of this. I don't think it would be a problem on a small tractor like mine.
