Make: Ryobi . I bought a battery (18v) drill and used it to drill 3/4" holes 12 - 14" through posts to fit gudgeons to hang farm gates.
Problem: The batteries spot heated rapidly and lost charge quickly.( The hot spot was under the stalk that fits in the handle, and was almost too hot to touch) They were recharged after they cooled down. They took charge several times then would not charge at all.
There is 1 original battery (1.3 Ah) and 2 X1.4 Ah batteries bought later. All 3 batteries were pronounced dead(won't charge) in 2019 and dropped in the dead battery box.

About a year ago I saw an item online that said a dead battery could be revived months(3 years in my case) later by recharging. It worked!!!. The dead batteries will now take charge and seem to charging to most of original(1.3-1.4 Ah). They are only used in the drill as when they got tested in the battery grinder, they got used up to quickly.

Has anyone else been able to resurect dead batteries like this?

Generally the NiCad batteries and the Nickel metal hydride batteries are more forgiving and able to be charged one way or another and put back into service. There are some tricks. The Li ion batteries are less forgiving. They may come back but are more likely to overheat, smoke, or even ignite if forced to take a charge.

You could probably have taken the three batteries apart, pulled out the good cells, and made two good batteries from them. Used to do this with the Sears NiCds and get another year or so out of them. Their original Japanese 19.2 volt batteries were amazing, but the later stuff were not so hot. I did get four new LiOn C3 batteries just before the company died for a super price and they are still working like new. Son works construction, nothing but Milwaukee stuff for him, but he really runs those tools hard.

Be very careful with damaged lion batteries. And if overheated, they were damaged. Don't leave on a charger and walk away. Especially overnight. Many have caught fire.... just be careful

^ I was going to say (worry) about the same thing

There is a reason you have to declare them for shipping or flying

Handloader109, I generally charge the batteries on the concrete floor of the garage in case they do catch fire.

correction to post 1.
These batteries are now only used on light 10 mm and less drilling.
Ryobi are to light to do the severe heavy duty work of drilling post gudgeons or thick steel plate.
I use another brand for this work.
