I agree that smokng litterers are especially galling. Even outside of buildings where they have designated smoking areas with those sand filled containers, there's always butts on the ground right next to it.

As for fast food... I was waiting for a friend sitting inside a Wendy's awhile ago when this young girl went through the drive-in, pulled up to near the window where I was sitting, looked in the bag she just picked up, reached in and tossed ketsup packets out the window! The patrons must have thought I was nuts as was banging on the window-- but she just drove off like nothing had happened. Moron...

The smokers is the one I don't understand.

Seems no one would stand in a group waiting for the light to change and throw down their McDonald's bag, but every smoker will throw down that butt comfortably.

Same with them tossing it out the window when heading down the road. Hard to see during the day, but at night I see the sparks bounce all the time. I never see that fast food bag fly out the window.

There is plenty of garbage in the ditch to suggest that the bigger stuff goes out the window also, just can't think of the last time I was following someone and saw it.

Smokers... All the time, no reservations...

Why is that?

Why is that? Well, you're very badly mistaken and I can't say why. I agree that many smokers do exactly as you said, but to claim they all do it ridiculous to say the least. My wife & I smoked for over 40 years and never threw cigarettes, butts, or filters out of the car. They went in an ash tray and into the trash at home. Even if the ash tray should get full, we always had a litter bag (we currently use Walmart grocery sacks) we could empty the ash tray into. And many other smokers I knew did the same.

But why is it that non-smokers feel so superior that they can make ridiculous statements about smokers? Kind of silly of me to lump all non-smokers together, isn't it?

Is your experience that it is rare for smokers to litter their left over cig butt?

It's my experience that it is very common for them to litter them, even when the ashtray/garbage is a foot away, or traveling with them at highway speed.

Same problem on my land that I allow hunters to use, but am considering closing to public use because of the litter. I don't understand how of all people hunters seem to be the worst effin pigs out there. Freaking piss jars, candy wrappers, hand warmer packets, ammuntion boxes and all kinds of trash. So I go out to hunt on my land on weekends and have to look and pick up this crap.

I remember when I was a kid it was worse though. The bottle law really helped to clean Maine's roadways up, and the trash is not as bad as it was in the sixties and seventies, but it is still enough of a problem that it makes me sick to see, especially on my own land.

Same here in Michigan. The bottle deposit law cleaned up the roadways quite a bit. Now they need to extend it to all types of bottles and packaging. That would get rid of all the 5 hour energy and water bottles that are out there now.

Nope, unfortunately, not rare at all; very common, as you said, and I, as much as anyone, would like to see those people fined. But the post I replied to said "Smokers... All the time, no reservations..." and that just ain't so.

That is because a smoker not littering their butts is a non - observable event . I smoke and do not throw butts out . I bet ya can 't spot me not doin' it :) .
