Just bought a 2002 3020 Mule and I need some help. I want to to adjust the valves just so I know they've been done. Can someone give me the how-to on that? I would also like to see a pic of someones engine compartment, preferably the throttle govenor assembly as I'm sure mine has been messed with. If someone has the service manual on pdf and wouldn't mind posting it or pm it to me that would be great. And lastly for now, do these 617cc gas engines idle on one cylinder? It seems to me mine is doing this and the other cylinder pulls in when you give it gas. I know this is a lot, but what else do you have to do?:)

Not sure what you are asking for. The governor is in a box that is riveted closed so if the rivites are drilled out it has been tampered with. The most certainly idle on both cylinders. I am going to try a pM.

BigK56, If you still think it's idling on one cylinder. Let engine cool completly than start it up, put a temperature gauge on each cylinder. If they both read the same your O.K. If one is hot and the other is just warm than yes it's idleing on a single cylinder. Check plug wires, or switch wires and see if opposite cylinder runs.

Good morning! The reason I think its idling on one cylinder is because it idles a little rough. So I pull the plug wire toward the back of the machine with no change in idle. Put it back on and pulled the wire next to the seat and the motor goes dead. I know both wires are firing because the both about knocked me down while when I pulled them off the plug. I pulled both plugs and cleaned them stuck them in the boots and turned the motor over. Both seemed to fire. Next I checked compression on both cylinders. Both were within 10lbs of each other. I pulled the carb cover and could visually see gas go in both barrels when I rev it up, however I don't see gas go in on either when it is idling. I'm going to pick up a new set of plugs and see what happens. I'll post pics later on today.

Today I checked the valve lash and it was fine. I also checked and sanded contact on fuel pump. It is working. However, there are still three things I want to get to the bottom of. The engine does idle and will not go dead but it does cough occasionally. If I'm holding a dollar bill over exhaust when it coughs it will suck dollar bill up against the tailpipe . Next the south bound cylinder doesn't appear to be running while idling. Only when I give it gas it pulls in. Can someone pull the plug wire off their engine while idling and tell me if they see a change?

I emailed it to you again and tried to post it here But even though it says i can it will not take a 8 meg zip file. The manage attachments data must be wrong and rightfully so.
I'm sorry but if does not go thru this time you simply need a better ISP.

Ding dang I thought every want a be racer and airplane mechanic knew this stuff. take a grease pencil, china marker, tile pencil, stick of butter and stick it onthe exhaust pipe for each cylinder and the one that does not burn off is not firing.

OK, you've got a two cylinder engine with a two barrel carb. Is that correct? It idles on only one cylinder, but otherwise runs fine. Still correct?

If so, check the carb's idle circuit for the cylinder that is missing at idle. Could be a plugged jet, or perhaps someone messed with one of those "sealed" idle mixture adjustments.

I also SIMPLY need a better mule, better truck, better job, more rain, more land, better tractor, ect.,ect. Ding dang I'm all out of butter so I guess I'm out of luck. Let me see, two cylinders you say, boy I'm not sure. I'll have to go recount. Let me go get my pencil so I can write all these great tips down. I'm afraid I'll forget before I get down to the shop. Hey, lets just all abandon this thread and I'll SIMPLY figure it all by myself.
Thanks to all, Ken
