My 7030 is not the easiest starting. Usually have to grind for 10-15 seconds. I am getting no observed white smoke. My old Allis 6060 would billow white smoke before it started. Do I have something unusual happening?

After checking the fuel filters check that the glow plugs are operational. A little white smoke usually indicates the engine is cold or has a bit of moisture (or condensation) in the cylinders. Not all tractors issue white smoke. My Kubota doesn't.

Yes, BSEKF, we have so little to go on.
  1. Was this just now or in cold weather? What temp?
  2. Had you run the glow plugs or not? For how long before cranking?
  3. Is the battery in good shape and cranking well?
  4. Is this a high-hours-engine that might be having less compression than it did in its youth?
  5. Does it run OK after it starts ?
  6. How long has it been reluctant to start like this ? New problem or for a long time?

  1. Was this just now or in cold weather? What temp? Worse in cold weather but all the time. Initial start, no problem when tractor is warm.
  2. Had you run the glow plugs or not? For how long before cranking? Yes and about 10 seconds.
  3. Is the battery in good shape and cranking well? I have questioned the battery, but it checks out, turns over OK but does not spin.
  4. Is this a high-hours-engine that might be having less compression than it did in its youth? 4 K hours
  5. Does it run OK after it starts ? Yes
  6. How long has it been reluctant to start like this ? New problem or for a long time? Since I got it a year ago.
Just realized there wasn't much white smoke. But it has been that way since I got it.

All the above but it sounds to me like you have a glo plug issue or you aren't energizing the glo plugs long enough to preheat the combustion area.

I have smoke on cold-starts, in cold weather conditions if I don’t charge the glow plugs for at least 10 seconds.

Probably so but I would also wonder -- at 4000 hrs -- about compression.

That would all depend entirely on how the motor was maintained. The M9 open station I own has over 6K hours on it and went in for an overhead adjustment this fall and the tech checked the compression and it was peachy. In fact everything was fine. Most of the valves were within spec too.
