Full of questions tonight!!

Is a cutting edge required on the heavy duty buckets? They state that they have holes for a cutting edge, but I'm not really sure if they're needed. No doubt it will help, but does it hurt anything to not use one? What do most people recommend?

If you're going to be doing a lot of work on surfaces that will wear away the cutting edge, e.g., concrete, black top, then you should consider buying a bucket with a replaceable, i.e., bolt on, cutting edge.

My bucket is predrilled for a cutting edge. I don't have one and have not noticed any wear at 60 hrs of use. I use mine mostly for dirt and some snow removal on concrete.

If you decide to get a bolt-on cutting edge, there are many toothbars that will not work with the cutting edge attached. There are some that do, but you should check before buying the toothbar, especially if you order it on-line. I have the cutting edge on my loader and I think it really gives the edge much more strength. The loader lip is at least doubled in strength with the cutting edge attached. For digging, those folks who have a toothbar say it is like "...putting your tractor on steroids." I plan get a toothbar, but I've procrastinated for almost three years. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

My little kubota loader had a welded on cutting edge. I wore it out and replaced it with a 4 by 1/2 in. welded on one. It really stiffened up the loader.

Remember the cutting edge is there to wear out and protect your bucket.

My 16LA came with the STD bucket, which after using about 2hrs, I was convinced was a POJ. Went back to the dealer and got the HD bucket right away. I'd say 2x or 3x stronger than the STD bucket.

By adding a tooth bar it really adds strength to the lip, and it only takes 5 minutes to remove the 2 bolts for the tooth bar.

If you are worried about wearing off the metal on the lip, there was some discussions here about using a wear bar of man made plastic material like the snow plows use.

But, in my opinion, unless your going around scraping miles of concrete once or twice weekly, the edge will last you a life time. And if it doesn't, take a welding class and make your own. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have a HD bucket with a bolt on cutting edge. It definitely stiffens and increases strength of the bucket. You can buy tooth bars that are specifically made for buckets with bolt on cutting edge. Woods, I believe, is one source. I have been more than satisfied. It makes a HD bucket really heavy duty.

I got mine from my NH dealer. Although I paid $179 for mine, after seeing it, I think it is worth that much. I also got the bolts for that $179. That's another $10 worth of stuff in my estimation. The bar is about 6" wide and is reversible with cutting edges on both sides. It makes the cutting edge a real "beast." I still want a toothbar though.
