Loader Drifting Down

I'd like to hear this too. In my 23 years as a tractor mechanic I can count on one hand the number of spool or valve issues I've seen. And have long ago lost count of the number of failed packings I have replaced with this type of symptom. I would never start with the valve being the problem.

:laughing::laughing:this is going to be a great discussion....maybe we can all count how many years of "Troubleshooting, Repair & Rebuilding" it takes to be a PRO.....

A couple of questions to the OP.

1) I presume from your description that this loader has double acting cylinders on the loader lift function. I.e. You can lift the front of the tractor with the FEL.

if yes) With loader raised would it drift all the way to the ground or just drop a distance and then stop?

If yes) this would indicate the seals/packing on one or both of the cylinders are bad. Double acting cylinders cannot retract fully if they are full of oil unless there is an external leak.

If no) I would suspect your spool valve is not returning properly.

Does this FEL have a single joystick or individual levers for each spool?

Did any of the spools or linkage get mud on them when you got stuck? Wheels throwing it up etc.

Joystick- try disconnecting the linkage from the spool and see if the spool returns to different position. NOTE: I would try this first with the FEL lowered and the tractor off. If the spool returns to the same position when moved in both directions I would then try it with the tractor running. This would check to see if the linkage is binding or wore.

After blowing air through all the lines you will have to cycle all of the functions through their full range of motion several times to purge all of the air from the lines.

Good luck

Hi Roy,

1) yes, correct, they are doubling acting cylinders, two for the bucket lift and 2 for the boom lift - I can raise the tractor with the FEL, had too one time to change the tire actually

I haven't tried lifting the tractor with the FEL/bucket, I didn't want to try that, I didn't want to cause more damage, but I can..

the interesting thing is that both bucket cylinders look squealy clean, no oil, etc., and they are greased, about 2 weeks ago

Its one single joystick

Considering how deep I was stuck and when the tow truck pulled me out, I would say, definitely yes, there was a ton of mud on the undercarriage.

I guess it would probably be best then to get it to a mechanic, since this is my first and only new tractor, and honestly, I do not know what a spool is, but I can see all the linkages there

You can change your lines around so that your tilt becomes your lift. This way will tell if it is control valve (spool) or not. It is likely one of your lift cylinders has developed an internal leak.

IDS,
if you are cofortable trying this get a garden hose and wash off any mud debris etc from around the joystick and all of the linkage attached to it. There is probably a cover over some of the linkage so access will be limited. If you got mud in the linkage it could cause the joystick / spools to not return to the center position properly which could cause your FEL to drift.

Do NOT use a high pressure washer since it could force water into places where you don't want water to be.

Valve spools are what the joystick linkage attaches to and are what controls the flow of oil to your cylinders.

Good luck

Steve,
did you ever find the problem? If yes would you please let us know what it was for future reference.

TIA
