To move and snake-out firewood logs I use an old Ford 4500 TLB . I'd really like to be able to use a winch on this machine. I'm thinking a 12 volt winch mounted on the loader. Possibly welding on a removable receiver hitch.
I'd be able to raise the loader for leverage. I can use the back-hoe stabilizers to keep from moving toward the load.
I'd wire the winch to the 12-volt back-hoe generator.
Has anyone tried this, what do you think?

You will have a much more powerful and very much so faster winch if you get a hydraulic one. Your TLB has more than plenty of juice to power one. Hydraulic winches are also cheaper than equally rated electric ones.

Good point on the hydraulic winch. I would have had to upgrade the electrical with a 12volt winch.

I would think that using the winch on the loader could damage it. The side load that could be exerted could twist the loader frame like a pretzel!

If I wedge the loader in the ground and just use straight pulls I think I'll be O.K

I'm trying to find the best way to plumb the hydraulics.

At the power beyond from the FEL add a Tee with a variable flow divider. Run the variable side to the "in" for the winch. The other goes to the hoe. The OUT from the winch can go directly back to the reservour. When not using the winch, the variable divider can be dialed down to nothing so it won't impact the hoe operations.

(The hoe is the place where the power beyond fluid is going.)

With pressure relief - probably what you want.

Do you know for a fact that the PB port is located at the FEL?
I think I may have one at the hoe, but haven't located at the loader yet.

Chugger did mention raising the loader while the winch was under load, so there is a very good chance he will twist the loader frame at some point in time. Using the loader bucket as an anchor is a fine idea, but other than that, I would find some other way.

You're right Sandman, the loader would have to stay down and dug in. I think the machine will be real stable with the weight on the stabilizers and loader bucket.

I was just adding a second vote to what you already said. Not my idea, it was yours!
A small winch might get away with pulling on the front end loader, but one mistake and you just spent four thousand dollars for a hunk of twisted metal. I think I would be inclined to add a very strong bumper or hook it to the drawbar on the back. Using either of those choices, you can still drop the fel into the ground and curl it to get a little more pull on the winch cable WHICH MAY NOT BE A GOOD IDEA CONSIDERING CABLES ARE USUALLY RATED FOR THE WINCH THAT THEY ARE ON. Popping a cable can be extremely hazardous to your health and others nearby, and to your tractor parts.
Whatever you decide to do, just be careful as there seems to be a lot of room here for error.

Chugger,

I DON'T know for a fact it is on the loader valve. Most commonly it is.

If you are sure the PB is on the BH valve, that would mean that the flow goes from the front mounted pump all the way back to the hoe. A return line for used fluid would go to the reservour. The PB line would then go to the FEL valve.

A non-PB FEL valve would have 6 hose and a PB valve would have 7.

Have you considered mounting a winch in the bottom of the hoe's box? If you made the mount so the winch was rotated face down (feed out to the ground),then add a pivot to go horizontally. You could have it so that the line would go out the back or out the front under the tractor.

If you mount it on the back, put the flow divider BEFORE the input to the hoe. That way, you can use the hoe and the winch at the same time.

Just thoughts...

A very good suggestion about mounting the winch in the bottom of the hoe's box. Seems like I have lots of options.
