Loading Ramps

I need to build a set of ramps about 4' long by 12" wide to load my SCUT onto a trailer. I have welding and cutting equipment but very little knowledge about the size and shapes of steel I should use to accomplish this. I could build a set of ramps but I tend to over do it and I'd like to be able to load the ramps by hand after the tractor is aboard.

You could use some 3-inch x 4.1 # C-channel. That is what my ramps on my dump trailer are made out of.

SA is on the right track. C channel for the stringers, and angle or more channel for the cross pieces. You can make it lighter if you can make some way to support the middle.

I have to ask - are you doing this to save money or for fun or practice? Because unless the steel is free, you can't save money.

I looked into doing similar when I got my used trailer and the ramps were cracking. Then I ended up buying aluminum ramps from Loading Ramps, Hauling, Transport, & Skateboard Ramp Superstore - Discount Ramps.com, and love them. They deflect a lot less than the angle iron original ones did and are light and easy to lift and store. I am loading a much heavier tractor than you are too. Mine are one-piece types that hook onto the trailer just like the original ones did and are rated for 5k per axle (8500lbs max vehicle). They have lighter single piece ones too which might make more sense for you. They also have folding ramps, but these are not the el cheapo Northern ones or anything like that.

Now if you are doing it for practice or fun or some other reason, go for it! Just know you can't beat prices of commercial stuff unless you find free steel.
