Local crackdown on "rolling coal"

I get drift overs in my car every day. Noise from a rear pointed exhaust is not going to help if the car is in front of you. There really is no proof or evidence that loud exhaust does anything whatsoever to prevent accidents. When I can hear a bike go by when I am on my mower with ear protection there is an issue. what about my right to NOT listen to it vs the riders right to have an illegal exhaust....... no brainer
Talking about drift overs. I'm 53' long and 11' tall when towing my RV and still have vehicles drift over into my lane when passing me on 4 and 6 lane highways. And some of these are towing trailers! I would expect them at least to be more aware of what they're doing.

I have a 2008 Chevy 2500 with Duramax 6.6. My DPF clogged up. $2500 to replace it or $1200 to delete. I deleted and got a very clean tune installed. Gained noticeable horsepower. More from engine not being restricted by the clog. Actually got about 40 hp from the tune. No coal rolling for me. In fact I don’t smoke unless I am heavy and stomp it. Then it’s just a short burst. The increase in fuel mileage was welcomed to. I can get 18 to 20 on the highway unloaded if I baby it.

If it stops one..just one ..that hears me before they see me...and looks in a mirror instead of a phone. Than it's worth it. I have no way of actually knowing if or how many times it already has done just that..but I'm certain it's more than a few.

I don't buy what you are selling. All you have to do is sound your horn as you approach a car from behind or if you see them start to drift into your lane. The real purpose for the noise of a harley is because you like it, and you don't care how many people you annoy.

I hate those things when they pass my horse trailer screaming like a banshee. I know and expect a big rig to be loud because it is required, but there is no need of those bikes scaring the crap out of the horses just because the owner likes the noise. Same goes for rice rockets and coal rollers, I would like to see the police ticket all of them.

I recently bought an '18 6.6 Duramax diesel Chevy and it does run very clean compared to older trucks. I wouldn't say that I'm in favor of all of the HP robbing emissions BS these days, but I also do not condone rolling coal on people just to be an a-hole or just for attention. I've been told at least 100 times in the 2 months since I bought this truck that I should delete it, tune it etc. But I really have no desire or need to. It has plenty of HP and torque for my purposes and I'm not about to void warranties and basically make it illegal.

Rolling coal on people is just plain ignorant and disrespectful, and deserving of an *** kicking. Loud exhaust systems are a different story. I doubt that most people do it just to annoy others. If you are a gearhead, performance driven person odds are exhaust mods are more about HP and the sound that comes with it. There is no better sound than a well tuned, strong, high HP engine pumping out power and speed. Of course, that sound is completely different for different engines and owners. I hate the sound of "fart cans" on little tuner cars, and also extremely loud Harley type cruiser bikes. Especially when just revving either one just to make noise and draw attention. But I love the sound of a sportbike screaming high rpms (please do not call them rice rockets or crotch rockets, lol) or any muscle car type sports car or truck that just roars with horsepower. Someone made a comment about a screaming Banshee......I have a Yamaha Banshee with way too many mods to list including exhaust mods. That screaming Banshee sound, literally, is just amazing to me but I'm sure it pisses off my neighbors, lol. My Yamaha R1 (1000cc sportbike) with mods including exhaust sounds like a racebike, which it essentially is. And again, winding up to 13,000 rpm's is just plain awesome to me but I'm sure it annoys some people. Nothing beats using all of your available HP sometimes and the exhaust from it is just a bonus. Everyone has their own opinion of what actually sounds good though. If you are one that is annoyed by it, deal with it the same way I have to deal with your quiet little no HP ride not being able to get out of my way, LOL.

So these Idiots with their loud Bikes, that are so safety conscious, wear ear plugs, thus, between that and the loud noise, deny themselves one of their important senses while on the road, namely hearing. REAL SMART bunch! They claim that they must make people hear them, but have little or no hearing themselves!

Now, that song "Leader Of The Pack" makes perfect sense. "Look Out, Look out, Look Out!" Didn't hear a thing! Now he's gone.

Curiously, what is gained by this practice? I can't imagine that emissions controls on modern diesel vehicles are as crude as those on gas vehicles were back in the 70s. Or is it more of a "the government can't tell me what to do" situation? I would imagine the equipment necessary to reprogram the ECU would cost many, many times more than any possible savings from slightly better gas mileage.
I've never owned (or had any need for) a diesel truck, so if this is a stupid question please enlighten me.

Answered below:

We were tootling along on a farm-to-market pavement doing 55mph when a nice big Ram passed us. As soon as he got around he gave us a coal-roll show. It was an impressive cloud but the cross winds were strong enough that his intentions were foiled. We got a good laugh out of it.

I've seen riders wearing ear plugs... that should tell them something.

All that you really do is piss off a lot of motorists who otherwise would be your allies.

Coming home one night from a job in NY, I pulled out around a car travelling slow. As I got up beside him all of a sudden I heard a chainsaw running. WTF? It was 9:00 at night, well after dark. I had gotten past him and pulled in before realizing that it was the car beside me and the driver wanted to race. PFFT. I was running a tuned GM 4.3, had been driving 10 hours, and hadn't been home in weeks. Try again when you have about 4 more cylinders, kid.
Had a guy sitting at a stop light with a couple girls in the car. Had a "tuned" pos with the weed eater exhaust. Guy was being really obnoxious showing off for the girls.

Boss and I were sitting in my stock F150 with the 4.6l v8. Boss was into street racing and said we should show home up.

Light turned green and I floored it. Sales right past him. Well the next stop light he was being really obnoxious. We smoked him again

3rd light, my boss rolled down the window and told the guy to give it up. You just got beat by a stock pick up truck Them girls had tears they were laughing so hard at the dude.

Just did a quick trip yesterday to take a doe to have her bred. Took my 2017 2500 w/ the L5P Duramax. Had the aluminum popper in the bed with a single doe. Average 24 MPG for the trip. About 90 minutes each way.

For the folks saying to delete and tune a L5P don't know what they are talking about or the cost involved. 2016 LMLs and prior are nothing like the 2017 and later L5Ps. At this point there is no way to delete an L5P without changing a bunch of stuff - including having to install an ECU from an older truck. Then they can't get rid of warning messages/lights on the dash and it still doesn't run quite right or as well as it did from the factory. My factory L5P will keep up with a friend's deleted and tuned LML. My exhaust is cleaner (meaning no rolling coal) and I get better fuel economy.

Properly tuned diesel will have nearly invisible exhaust. The black stuff is diesel that burned after the exhaust valve opened.....too much fuel and not enough air in the combustion chamber for a clean burn. It's effectively lost power, and dollar bills flying out the exhaust pipe.

Talking about nice sounding exhaust, the best I ever owned was a '55 Ford when I was 16. I put in a 292 with what we called a "wild cam" back then and 2" straight pipes all the way back to the bumped.

Idling through town, it was a head turner for sure. The only draw back was I couldn't sneak back home after my curfew. The pipes would wake up Dad.
