It ended on its side (vs upside down), so it probably has a ROPs. Probably no seat belt in use though.

John Deere 4020 was built 62-73. No ROPS back then, I believe.

True, but there is probably a retrofit program out there...
If it didn't, that tractor has to be very unstable as it is sitting and the only thing keeping it from going completely upside down is the sheetmetal of the fender. The angle it is sitting at is right for a ROPS to have stopped the roll.

My old IH2500b had split brakes and a bar that could be flipped to lock them together to prevent only one from being hit while on the road.

Regularly using split brakes typically involves more use of one than the other resulting in uneven wear of the brake parts downstream of the pedal. Throwing the bar to lock the brake pedals together can still result in pull to one side even when brake pedals are applied equally. Let's include a suggestion that proper maintenance is important to the tractor operating correctly when following operator manual recommendations.

My guess is the way the tractor is sitting, he was coming towards the viewer, it veered to its left, rolled high-side over onto its right side as it skidded across the on-comming lane, onto its top (and the driver) then onto its left side on the opposite side of the road, facing a bit towards where it was coming from. Basically, a 270 degree roll over with a 135 degree direction shift. Blow it up and you can see possible skid marks backing this theory up. The driver would have been the pivot point of the roll over.

Anyhow, its just a theory and something to think about for all of us.
