ROHO,
We spent a week in Roswell and the Carlsbad area a couple years ago.
Very nice area with cheap land but very dry.
Got the southwest brown to everything that isn't watered.
Liked the area and intend to visit again but not to live there.
We then drove to Santa Fe, Taos, and liked the north of NM much more.
It is on the revisit list.

Thanks!

BTolle,
You are so correct that there are a lot of beautiful areas to visit.
We intend to travel to at least to two possibles a year until we form a short list and even them we may want to wait a while and let the idea really sink in before we jump.
We will keep our place in MA. and the kids will be as close as the nearest airport as far as that goes.
I travel the world for my job and domestic travel is no biggie for me.
we live 30-45 min. from the larger cities in MA. and we would like to keep things that way. To many people too close is not for us.
Thanks!

I say buy an RV and see the USA, just cause YOU traveled does not mean the MISSES has gotten to do so. horses>? big waste of hay if ya ask me but some folk love em, I hear they taste like rabbit! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ok J/K I have been all over midwest from Mexico to the UP while I would not want to move from OHIO unless my home becomes "mobile" I prolly wont. but I think some of the prettest places are CO, MO MI and FLA. considering the place and things you WANT then start looking. the hills of wva and TN are very nice too but a bit harder to retire in even though there are many retirement villages popping up down there due to land costs and cost of living ect...

anyhow if I got choice of WORLD it would be GUAM hands down followed up by a vacation home right here in OHIO>! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Big Gary, you would really like the area and being GA country the cost of housing and other things are cheap, except if you can walk to the edge of your property and dip your toes in Lake Blue Ridge, then your talking 500k for a 1 acre lot. Very Bible Belt and a dry county. Beer and wine every where but hard stuff at the county line.

Hey thanks Big, I never been to NM but am planning too! My F-N-Law & a friend was raised around there! Have heard about how beautiful northern NM is! I live right east of HouTex & it's OK but would love to see things west of San Antonio to Arizona someday!

Like others (suggesting their home area), I'd suggest Meigs / Athens Counties Ohio. Land is reasonable, and we have all four seasons.
For a little milder winter season you could head down to Kentucky. With horses mentioned in your original post, I'm surprised Kentucky wasn't mentioned before.
But, with this global warming 10 years from now us folks here in SE Ohio might have our winters change to the milder variety. (Wishful thinking on my part .....).

/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif...don't come to Texas ... too hot .. too many people ... land prices beginning to go out of sight ... primarily I think due to yankees coming in jacking up our prices ... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Although I hear that Bastrop and Brazoria Counties are much more reasonable than counties to the north... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

going up to Bastrop this weekend to hopefully buy 20 acres asking price is $2925 per ......it's in the boonies just far enough that we might have to pump in sunlight ....PERFECT! .. 1 lane road with grass growing up in the center in places, nearset phone line post is 2 miles away... couldn't fit me better if I'd ordered it made that way ... 5 - 6 acres of pasture - the rest mixed oak & cedar with just a couple of big pines. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

mikim,
Off grid living? I'm not sure I could get the wife to go for that.
The price is right on the land!
I had an Uncle that retired from the Army in TX. and he loved it.
Gotta visit soon.
