Locust Trees are Nasty

I hope you are treating the stumps with Remedy or Crossbow herbicides after cutting other wise you are in for some serious work....

A cheap applicator is to put brush killer in a dish washing detergent style bottle and squirt it on the ring of the bark to kill it. Works fairly well.

I cut the herbicide with a 4:1 to 8:1 ratio of diesel an herbicide.

The 4:1 will kill an adult tree in the summertime by just spraying from the base up 3ft.

The 8:1 ratio will kill the roots after cutting if you had not pretreated (killed) the tree first. Diesel keeps the herbicide from washing off and soaks through the bark on live trees.

I learned the hard way that just cutting them down leads to a lot of work!

I had the bottom portion cleared with a dozer and didn't have access to a heavy disk before planting my native grasses. Long story short I was not able to cut the roots into small enough pieces to kill them and now I have a solid acre of locust trees sprouting.

I use Tordon RTU, squirt it on the stumps of cut trees or cut a saw kerf around the trunk of uncut trees & squirt it in the kerf all the way around!

I'm writing this down and trying it next spring.

Remedy, Crossbow or Tordon,,,,,, which is more potent? Which can I buy by the quart? I could never use a 2.5 gallon jug.

I get my Tordon RTU at Orscheln's, a Midwest chain similar to TSC, runs around $15/qt. They sometimes put it on a sale price a buck or two cheaper.

The Dow Agro Sciences site did not list locust tress under woody plants controlled by Tordon.

Believe me, it works on Locust trees, I've used it for years!

OK, I'll give it a try. I've got the same problem most others have - when I cut 1, 4 come back up. Do you put it on stumps or girdle the bark? Any particular time of year?
