Log Dog Bed

I have been playing around with the idea of making some log furniture. Even though my Aussie has been happily sleeping in the kennel next to our bed, I thought it would be good practice to make him a log bed. If he doesn't end up liking to sleep on it, I have 2 others that I know will. Anyway, I cut the Alder and rough peeled it with a draw knife about 2 months ago. It needed to dry anyway but I finally decided it was time to finish it off. I cheated a bit and didn't make real tenons (tenon bits are $200!!!) and ended up using a 3/4" paddle bit for the holes drilling about 2/3 the way through and 3" lag bolts with washers to attach the corner posts to the rails. Working with real logs is a bit of a challenge with all the curves, bows, and knots and as such I didn't really have any solid "plans" for it, just sort of ad-hocked it as I went. It's 24" x 36" and the posts are 4" round and about 30" high. The platform is about 8" off the ground. I figured it would look good with those little caps covering the lag bolt holes so I added those to finish off the rustic look. ;-)

I think he likes it..

Looks nice and comfey, can I mail order one. We share our bed with two grown chocolate labs which get real crowed some times. What we need is one twice the size of yours for the two labs. nice job.

when i saw the tittle i was like... man my dogs would never lay on a bed made of logs... way to lumpy and hard

looks great.

pssssttttt btw when i built 200' of "rustic" railing with logs, we used various hole saws in the drill press to cut the ends of the logs "round ish" to fit the tie in log.

worked great and was a real time saver to give you that great hand fit look.

(oh and need the FEL on the CUT to move it to i suppose )
