Log Dragging

I would recommend that you do not use the front loader for pulling backwards. It is hard to steer and is very easy to tip. If you are going to do a lot of this kind of work, find a good winch. I like that tong setup as long as you can back right up to the log. If you have to cross any soft areas or reach out the winch is the only way.

I for sure can't find any arguement with that logic. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Re: Log Dragging (clevis)

I think I'll be able to back up to most of the logs. So what is the frame called that is hooked to the 3pt on beenthere's photo? and I need log tongs and a bit of chain? and maybe some weight up front. Is that about it. thanks again, bw

Re: Log Dragging (clevis)

Tongs have a limited diameter range that they are able to hold on to. If the log is too small they just side off the end, too big and you can't get a grip, for the rest they are great. You might also consider welding some chain hooks to the top of the hitch unit so you can hook up several small ones at a time.

Re: Log Dragging (3pt frame)

The frame I have now is the I-match (Deeres quicktach) which has the big hook at the top for the tongs. The tongs I have are 1" that open to about 20". A larger log can be gripped at least enough to assist getting a chain around it if the tongs are beyond the end of the log, and not over the log. The suggestion for grab hooks welded on the frame are exactly what is needed for small logs as well as anytime you are making a long haul, as sometimes the log will drop out of the tongs, depending on how rough the terrain is and how crooked the logs are. Forestry Suppliers has logging tongs for about $65. See:

The frame I used to have for 30 years was a heavy 3" angle iron frame with a large railroad lift hook at the top. But it was very similar to the shape and size of the I-match frame.

I've been using tongs or chains attached to my carryall. The top link transfers weight above the line of the axle in a forward direction. This holds the front end down, when you lift the log. Having the front end of the log elevated allows you to drag it much easier also.

Do you have a picture of this arrangement that you could post?

I don't understand why hooking to the top link would hold the front end down. Any weight aft of the rear axle will take weight off the front end.
