I've never pumped the handle on my splitter. When the going gets tough, it slows down by using the 2 stage pump. I'm assuming by pumping the handle you are momentarily forcing it back into high, over and over?

Agreed... If I can not split my hard oak, I just pause and up motor speed a bit and come back at it again.... I have had oaken round 'POP' explosively and fly out of splitter, but no need to pump handle...

To me by pumping handle you are just shocking system and not allow pressure to normalize between strokes, pumping handle is probably major cause of problems with blowing pumps, hoses and filters...
