Hi there. I'm building my own log splitter and wondering what the deal is with these other hydraulic pump manufacturers besides Haldex/Barnes. All i seem to be able to find is "haldex" pumps. What about Vickers, Eaton, Danfoss? I dont know a lot about this stuff, so keep it simple for me please. I have a Honda GX160 5.5 HP engine that i may use with the 11gpm pump that i still have to buy, or (my other question) i might buy a 13HP Honda Replica engine off ebay for $260+/- and go with a larger pump.

Does anyone have any experience with the performance, durability, and longevity of replica engines?

Thanks guys for any help.

You definitely want a 2 stage pump. I don't know if I have seen anything but a Barnes. The two stage runs at low pressure high vol until it hits hard splitting. Then it downshifts by itself to high pressure low vol. Shifts back by itself when the load reduces. Definitely what you want. There is another way with a special valve that regenes somehow and it must be used with a single stage pump. If you have not bought the pump yet a 2 stage is the only way to go. The 11 gpm pump will work fine with the 5.5 hp engine and a 4 inch cylinder.

No, I havent bought the pump yet, but i will definitly get a 2 stage. I'm cheap so i can save $40 by getting it off ebay instead of TSC. Does anyone know any other places to buy a Barnes/Haldex 2 stage pump other than Northern, Surplus Center, Ebay, or TSC?

Would you believe a home made splitter used a combine power steering pump? Of course all of the other parts were salvaged as well.

Even harder to believe is a combine made from a log splitter pump!!
