Log splitter hydraulic problems

Does the cylinder extend at full speed or how many seconds does it take to extend? What is the bore and stroke of the cylinder? With time and size flow can be calculated.

Possible the hi - lo sequence valve is stuck from sitting for nine years. Since this valve recirculates the oil from pump outlet to inlet it might cause aeration. Cylinder speed above should answer this question

Have you checked the pump to engine coupling? Maybe the keyway fell out.

It takes about 90 seconds to extend the cylinder and about the same to retract, slow and jerky motion in both directions, i also did check the the lovejoy key was inplace and setscrews were tight

I’d guess the pump has about got to be bad.

Is there a filter that might be plugged creating more suction and an air leak?

Are these pumps able to be rebuilt, if not what is a good pump to replace it with

/ Log splitter hydraulic problems #28
I’m sure it’s possible, but log splitter pumps are cheap. The labor would probably cost more than another pump. Do you want quality or cheap? The cheapest pumps I’ve found are sold on amazon. I don’t remember the brand but the end is blue and the other end is aluminum.

Im all about being cheap, but I also know when not to be. This is the time I would rather spend good money for better quality. What is a good brand name?

Concentric/Haldex and MTE are the major US manufacturers of 2-stage pumps. Their pumps are all steel body. Import pumps typically have a steel mounting flange with a aluminum body. It is common for pumps to be rebranded with new part numbers that the original manufacturer does not recognize.
None of the brands are rebuildable .

The 90 seconds extend is approximately 1 GPM flow. Even a wore out pump should produce close to rated flow at no pressure. I suspect you have something else wrong other than the pump.

Just a update on my progress, WE solved the problem!.... it was indeed the pump. But more importantly I would like to thank each and everyone of you guys for your help it is greatly appreciated. This has been a adventure for me because of my lack of knowledge on hydraulics, but I guess the big take away is what I have learned while pounding my head against the wall while doing it. I learned a great deal from you guys. Now I feel much more confident that I have the real world knowledge for future issues. Agin I thank all for your willingness to help me. Sincerely Tim

Tim.

Thank you for coming back to advise of the outcome and state your appreciation for the advice you received.

It happens far too often when a forum member finds the solution we just never hear from them again.

Now with your new found knowledge, you have the responsibility to post advice when someone else comes along with a splitter problem.

Oh by the way the other thing I learned is that just because you own a peice of equipment, no matter how big or small and rather you need it or not is the importance of keeping such things stored inside and maintained periodically. Maybe just going out and starting it up twice a year or so could have saved me a lot of headache and a few hundred dollars!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if something came apart inside the pump given how little it was pumping. As oldnslo said, even a worn pump should have pumped more

/ Log splitter hydraulic problems #37
Maybe it was stuck on the low pressure side and the relief valve was set at 1500 psi.

Input seal stuck and just pumping air?

I aswell still have questions, but now that the splitter is working I will rip the old pump apart and see what I can find. It looks simple enough to take a apart. I don't know what I'm looking for but I think I can do it. I will report back as I progress agin thank u all
