Log Splitter Valve Failure on JD Tractor

I've been using a log splitter attached to my 2355 JD 65 hp rear dual SCV by pulling the the SVC level to the rear.
The Splitter had an ENERGY open center valve. The splitter is 20 years old and was working fine until last week.

I assumed the valve had died, so I ordered a "ONE SPOOL PRINCE CONTROL VALVE". Here's the link to what I bought:https://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?UID=2252122610015452&catname=hydraulic&qty=1&item=9-6765

I was told JD had a closed hydraulic system and I needed a closed center valve.
Anyway I installed the new valve and the cylinder failed to move forward or reverse.
I removed the plug that made the valve a closed center and the cylinder would move
forward SLoooowly (inch per second - maybe). The return was normal speed.

The Tech at SurplusCenter.com said put the plug back in and screw in the pressure release valve
and it will work fine. -- Nope -- Now the cylinder doesn't move at all.

HELP!!! -- I got a lot wood to split.

You need to feed us more info.....system drawing on your JD and where and how you plumbed that valve in!!

If you are plugging into the rear remotes with the your splitter valve it is just a continuing loop with the tractor lever pulled back.
If the tractor functions work when the remote is in neutral I would check the quick disconnects take a pressure guage and plug into them to check the tractor. Might be that the packing glands on the cylinder piston is just worn out letting the oil bypass. I would think the ram would still move in that case if it weren't pushing anything.

I'll post some pix of the whole setup in a few minutes. Time now 9:30PM CST-- Thanks, I hope you guys can help.

First off the new valve you got is not a log splitter valve. It will work but its not the right valve.

Second if running off a remote with the valve handle open its now a open center system to the splitter know matter what the tractor is.

I think your issue could be the valve but highly unlikely. I think as others do its your cylinder. Try removing the valve from the equation for testing purposes and use the 2 long hoses you have and hook them to the cylinder and remote on the tractor and try operation the splitter by moving the remoter handle to function the splitter.

Lastly make sure you have the proper amount of fluid in the tractors reservoir. Its possible you could be low on hydro fluid.

I have that valve to run my snow plow. The tech is a idiot. You are now running full hydro psi from your tractor to the splitter which is beyond the limits of most cylinders on splitters. Unscrew the Pressure relief valve fully then put in 7 1/2 turns which I believe will get you back to the 1500 or so psi setting you need. You will need to get a gauge on the system to set the valve properly.

Thanks Again Everyone,

I'll be trying the things you have suggested. In the mean time, here some photos of the setup. They are in my Log Splitter album. I hope the link works.

DP is 100% correct on this. I think your tractor is a CC system, but since you are powering the new valve from you remotes that have a constant flow now because the lever on the tractor is pulled the new valve needs to be OC. You can prove the old valve was OC with air pressure to the IN port-withthe valve in nuetral the air should be blowing out of the OUT port.

Is is possible the rod is bent or the wedge is jammed on the beam somehow?

Thom2 said he tried the valve both ways. He said the cyl returned normally, so the cyl apparently works after installing the new valve. That valve is relieved at 1500 psi unless he has changed it. There is no detent on that valve, but there is a detent kit. What really happens to the CC system with an OC valve in line since the fluid now has a path to tank? What would happen if the hoses were reversed? Reseat the QD's.
