Log Splitter?

What it the make, and model of your three point, PTO log splitter?

You Joined in 2008 and this is only your second post? Whats been keeping you? :laughing:

3pt log splitters may not have all the bells and whistles of standalones, like 2 speed pumps, but they are sturdy maintenance-free machines that can go through a lot of work year after year. Their reputation for being slow is meaningless, the men have always slowed my splitting, not the machine.

About 10yrs. ago I built a vertical log splitter/wood rack that mounts to a 3pt hitch on the tractor. The splitter runs off the tractors hydraulics and can split wood either mounted to the tractor or standalone. Recently, I just pulled up to the splitter, attached the hydraulic quick connects and went to splitting.

Get the idea? So I can take the tractor to a fallen tree. I cut, split, and stack the wood on the wood rack. Then drive the tractor (when rack/splitter is on the 3pt) to my deck where I transfer the wood for use. Best setup I could come up with and it really works great.:thumbsup:

I had the same issue, i wanted a log splitter but my yanmar doenst have and hydraulic ports. So i got this sweet machine yeserday. :thumbsup: I tried it out today with a chunk of wood and after the first split, i am ready to split the other 6 cord that i have all cut up from both a while back and 5 cord from cutting today. i got a great deal since my splitter came with a free chain saw. I got more hours on that saw already than the splitter. In your case, i highly suggest the self propelled unit. A few of the reasons i got mine was...

1. 
   1. I dont have hydraulic ports
   2. I want to be able to use it anywhere, even if the tractor is unavailable
   3. If it is self propelled, i wont be putting that many extra hours on my tractor for just splitting firewood, it will be on the splitter itself.
   4. The self propelled can be borrowed out to my neighbors, even without hydraulics on their tractors
   5. i can pull it on the road, try that with a 3 point. :confused2::laughing:

i got a great deal since my splitter came with a free chain saw. I got more hours on that saw already than the splitter. :[/LIST]

I got a screw in auger that goes on my post hole digger. Screws right into whole logs which I lift with my 3pt or the end of larger logs, it splits the log then I buck off firewood length pieces til I get to the auger, roll the log a quarter turn and do it again. It makes firewood a pleasure.

Actually, its a Husqvarna. The free chain saw deal was hard to beat. :thumbsup:

3720, Your post from yesterday makes good points with the exception of point #4. Having equipment that can be borrowed by friends/neighbors might be reason not to have a stand alone splitter. Sure, the occasional use by the neighbor is fine and if they also believe in lending out equipment is a workable arrangement.

I just find that borrowing out things doesn't work as well as it should. Of course one could just say no and in that case a stand alone splitter is a good idea. I have a three point splitter and am planning on converting it to a stand alone this winter after all the wood is split and I bored and looking for a project. I just don't plan on telling my neighbors and hopefully they won't see me splitting.

i am also looking at splitters but am going to get a tractor mounted one as i can then split on site and load bucket up and then return it to the shed with minimal fuss.

beachcombed half a dozen logs today, here is that splitter working on one. U can see where I have bucked off split pieces. If I would do it next to the wood pile, would only have to handle it once to stack but I prefer to keep the mess on the beach and bring it to the pile with the loader so the sawdust goes out with the tide. Already had the post hole digger so just traded the guy who makes the splitter some crab and 50 bucks for it.
