In case y'all were wondering what became of that log and subsequent lumber pile. Well maybe a third of it put up so far. Here's a couple of pictures to show fruits of my(and the Kioti's) labor. Moving my first slider into position. Them darn things are heavy, green lumber sure makes a difference. With winter coming can't wait for drying...

Oh BTW this is the Kioti's new home, sure hope it doesn't have an appetite for goats and chickens because it has to share space, Kiotis being carnivores and all.

MM; sorry for delay in responding, was away for Holiday.

The barn is PT pole structure, girts and structural wood is pine/spruce and the B on B siding is Aspen (poplar). Wasn't sure how I'd like it but works quite nicely, it's sawn thick (full 1") and put on green. It can warp like crazy if allowed to dried improperly. Many old eastern barns were sided in poplar, shiplap or clapboard mainly, for economic or availability reasons. The same for me, it was on my woodlot, needed to thin to promote more desireable species, isn't worth marketing as sawlogs and it saws quickly. It covered quickly as I ended up with mostly 1x10"s and 12"s, sweet.

I am going to treat wood, next year after it cures, just haven't decided with what yet. Probably colored stain, I'm partial to linseed oil based, or painted. The CFO/Homestead Supervisor will most likely wiegh in quite heavily on this decision, on color at least if not material used.:)

Wish I had access to Doug Fir, nice wood.

WillieK,

I used the poplar down here fo the siding on my shed after my neighbor recommended it.....he works at the local sawmill. I tore some old poplar off that had been up for 10 or so years and used it for the for the nailers. If i didn' spray the nailgun nails with WD, they would not countersink, but stuck out over an inch:confused: And forget about driving them by hand....that stuff is hard as...heck. I got 3 bundles(3K bf ) of "throw offs" for $450 , and ended up with about a half a bundle of scrap. Since my mill is not up and running yet, i was pleased with that!
