If you move even a few logs around let me suggest you purchase one. These things work great.
For the price a nice addition to your tractor.

Terry,

Would you mind posting a pic or two of your set-up?

I have some logs to move and am trying to determine best set-up for me.

Thanks in advance.

Somewhere here I posted a pic of how I use my tongs on my front end loader. When you get the knack you can move logs all around and never leave the seat.

As Tom mentioned there are some good posts on the subject. Which is one of the reasons I bought mine. I will take some pictures but basically I have mine attached to my buckets two hooks with a chain. With a little practice you can drop them on a log and pick up the log without getting off your tractor. Unhooking does not work as well (staying on your tractor) but can be done.

Where to buy one? I saw one in one of my catalogs, but can't find it again! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Northern has them and so does Bailey's. Never used em but thinking of such as I have a lot of dead elm to clear out. Keep in mind that there are lifting tongs and there are skidding tongs and they are not one in the same.

I've been wondering about the difference. They look the same but have different ratings. Are the lifting tongs made with higher grade steel, or is it just that they have been tested and are rated for lifting? My skidding tongs certainly have done a lot of lifting with no problem. Course I'm not lifting above people or equipment and a failure would do no harm. I can't imagine using skidding tongs and not having a certain amount of lifting involved.

Lifting tongs have a steeper angle on the tong spikes and the good ones are tested and certified for overhead lifting.

Price is another factor, lifting are alot more money.

Since I don't have anything to lift overhead with I'll only be going skidding when I get some but will probably buy from Baileys over Northern as they are only about 1/2 agian as much and I would rather have a little sturdier set.

Regards,
Kevin

I got the 16" from Baileys and they are sturdy. I have used and abused mine and the only thing I have had to do is replace the pin in one of the clevis'. I'm pretty sure the shipping is higher from Northern, too.
