We are considering building a PTO powered logging winch;similar to Farmi, ect.Does anyone know a source for the clutch that we would be using. We have the capabilities of building the rest.

Search this site for guys using drive axle. PTO to driveshaft, wire on one rim, breaks on both. Keep the breaks under separate control. Apply Break to wire side for skidding. With PTO on and wire break on the other wheel will spin. Release the wire break and apply the breaks to the other side of the differential to wind in.

Not pretty but works.

You could bolt, rivet, or weld common automotive disc brake pads to the pressure disk.

A clutch workshop should be able to cut a suitable friction plate, you can glue it to the drive wheel.

The last clutch rebuilder left our town about 12 years ago...

Seems like the occupation deals with "hazardous materials"......

IT was dark and noisy in there, ;-))

Here's just me thinking out loud. Couldn't you just bolt a regular automotive style clutch to a sprocket? Then parts would be fairly common.

How about using a hydraulic motor on a winch that has a release to free flow. This would give forward
and backward under power, you only need some chain and two gears of proper size to the RPM of
motor.

Have you ever tried pulling out 100ft of line AGAINST a hydraulic motor?
Not something you will want to do a second time!

An automotive clutch has one too many friction surface faces. But could make a useful material donor.

You might be able to adapt a centrifugal clutch of the type they use to build GOCARTS.
They operate like a chainsaw clutch except bigger and can handle more horsepower.

Then there is the electric clutches used for air-conditioning in cars or again those used on riding mowers when a snow blower is front mounted.
Naturally when not engaged they then free wheel so a brake would be needed.
