there was a recent thread, i don't know 1 to 2 weeks ago. for drive way alarms. and the old "gas station" thing came up. were someone came in and drove over a hose. and it rang something inside the shop, to let them know to come out and deal with the person that just drove in.
someone gave a link, to a manufacture that had it all pretty much covered in different types of alarm setups.. from water based in a hose with a little bit of air. to electrical and relays, to wireless, to magnetic, to motion detection (beam of light being cut)

motion detection on security cameras, the actual DVR (digital video recorders) for the cameras, is by far the best, being able to select grids, of the video feed, to remove "grass", "tree limbs", etc... to keep security system from going off and/or to record video. but ya get in a ugly situation of distance between camera and recorder. both wired and wireless.
the general motion detection (cheap stuff) for say outside lights above or around a door to house or like. easily go off with even some wind and blowing freshly cut grass.
magnetic sensors. (picks up if something has enough magnetic (metal in it)) on lighter stuff, say a bike, or atv, or utv may not set it off.
the water in a hose / pipe. that runs across driveway. and clear back to house/shed. and then a little bit of air were sensor is. may not register atv/utv. if they are not heavy enough, and/or if the pipe/hose flexes to much. (hose/pipe flexes like a balloon) as long as hose that runs across driveway. doesn't flex to much (balloons up to much), and the pipe running how ever long it needs to be back to home/shed. is solid enough not to give. you would be golden, though might advise using a hose. vs a rigid solid pipe, and keep fittings more so sharp 90's to a min amount if non at all. to avoid water hammering effect.
if you ran electrical. wire diameter would need to go up to deal with losses. perhaps not put it in as deep as a water line would need to be. possibly setting up some "repeaters" if need be if you want video/sound.
i am not a fan of long range wireless, or less it is line of site and nothing in between. a wind blows through trees and zap there goes wireless connection.
i am not a fan of wireless security systems. it can be rather easy to hack into some of them. and see what the cameras are seeing. even if wireless security has encryption, i wounder how many know how to accurately set the encryption? or rather how many folks know how to set and adjust there wifi router in there home and security system on it?
