Thanks Harvey. It means a lot when you like it. It been fun and it was hard to put the land up for sale until the realtor told me where see wanted to put the starting price. After that all is good. I'll just do it again, only better.

James,

Congrats on the new job and your fence. It looks great. I never thought about how you hold the sucker rods in place while welding and would have never come up with those hangers. Very cool!!!

How did you paint the fence? Sandblast? Or did you use a rust type paint?

I'm also curious about your entrance. I'd love to see some pics of it.

Thanks Eddie, the fence in all white. I used a phosphoric rust converter. Just put it in a pump up sprayer. 400ft of fence across the front of property took 5 gallons and about 1hr to do. The I primed with an oil base primer which was not needed according to the instructions on the PRC but i did any way. Then 2 coats of Rustolum Gloss White.

As for the gate the pictures are coming. I try to do a little every night. Keeping it a supprise until then. :D Not that it's a Harvey supprise but does look pretty darn good. It's not all that I wanted when the project started due to the job change.

Your fnece is darned right beautiful, jsut beautiful. I cna't wait to see the pics where it is all pained white.

Also those hanger things are about the cleverst things i have ever sen. leave it up to Harv to come up with that idea, and you implemented it perfectly. Again, it is really beautiful.

I'm inSouth Carolina and have about 30 acres in bad need of fence. I really think that "Texas Style" fencing would be great for me. Can you give an estimate on material cost. Also, I see what sucker rod looks like but what is it? And please tell me I don't have to wear one of those cowboy hats. Thanks

Sucker rod is usually 25ft long solid rod. It has a threaded coller on the end to screw each section. It comes in from 1/2in up 1in or more o.d.. Its used to go inside well pipe (oil or water well) for pumping of liquid from the bottom of the well. Mine was used 1/2in rod and the price was around $6 a stick. The pipe was 2 7/8in o.d. used oil field pipe and the last time I checked was $1.25 per ft. New 2 7/8in schedule 40 pipe I would guss is aroung $1.75 per ft. Problem with buying used oil field pipe is the length. Its usually 30ft to 32ft in length so it takes a long trailer to hall it. New pipe is 20ft length and much eaiser to handle. Personally I liked being able to screw the used oil field pipe together and not have to weld.

Hope that gives you some idea on material costs but your area the costs will most likely very.

Thanks for the info. Not much oil field drilling around here so would have to go new. Seems like a fence made that way would out live me, kids and grandkids without too much maintenance.

If you're not in a big hurry, keep an eye on want ads, craig's list, etc for used pipe. I got plenty of 2" and 1.5" pipe to do what I'll need at about half the RETAIL cost of USED pipe from the local wantads.

Here are some pictures of the stars place inside the sucker rod. There will be one on each side of the gate and one every 6th section. The stars are cast aluminum with weld tabs. I made a frame out of 3/4 square tube. This allowed be to be able to weld the sucker rod anywhere I needed it. There are a total of 10 stars.
