Looking at 20 gauge Shotgun

excelagator,
If your wife likes the O/U, Stoeger is a very reasonably priced gun with very nice features for the money. I got my wife a 20ga which she now shoots all the time.
Here is a link to that story.
Left Handed Shotgun
The 20ga is something she could shoot all day.

And from my standpoint, for home defense, the sound of the slide racking is almost as effective as the shotgun itself.

Why would you waste a shell pumping?? The only think they'll hear from me is the safetly clicking!!

Because in a house with my two kids living in it, I dont want to leave a round in the chamber, and would prefer that the folks leave prior to me having to pull the trigger.

Understandable, and while the act of taking a life stays with you forever and I do not have any children... should someon enter my home, most likely at night knowing I'm home, I would not think twice about pulling that trigger first!!! Not a situation I ever want to be in so I hope only to speculate!

And the comment was in reference to the act of pumping for the sound.. like the movies.....

I have an 870 pump in 12 gauge. It would be a great gun and has served me very very well over the years.

I don't know if all pump guns have this feature but before you load the first shell into the empty chamber you must depress this little slide lock button on the trigger guard before the slide will open. I like this feature because my 3 YO kid is very unlikely to figure out how to chamber a round if the gun is stored with a loaded magazine.

I also have a handgun and rather have the wife armed with a shotgun than my 40SW for home defense.

To the second part of your statement, although I wrote my answer poorly, that is what I was referring too.

My belief (could be right or wrong) but MOST criminals will think for a second when they hear me rack the round into the chamber (pumping) which I distinctly hope leads to their quick exit from my property, prior to my pulling the trigger.

Highbeam, I think that is a common / standard feature, at least all the pumps I looked at had it. Maybe someone more gun savvy can say otherwise?

Hmmm, on my 870 (super mag) when the chamber is empty, the slide will function without having to depress the slide lock. Once a round is chambered, the slide is locked until after the trigger is pulled OR the lock is depressed. So I use the slide lock to empty the chamber and magazine. I guess if I left it cocked but with the chamber empty it would work like Highbeam says? Or is mine not functioning right? Guess I need to review the manual!

A standard pump action will slide if the action is not cocked (ie trigger has been pulled). Otherwise they have a tab to depress (usually by the trigger to work the action)Some have a magazine cutoff which will prevent another round from being chambered if the action is worked. With something like the 870 I see no reason to ever leave a round in the chamber -- if you take the plug out of the magazine tube you can put four rounds in the pipe -- probably adequate for most house invasion possibilities ;) I am a lefty who learned to shoot from both shoulders cause I got tired of shells going across my face and in the days of cheap ammo most would emit a fair amount of burning crap if you pumped fast. I also have a Ithaca 37 and Browning BPs that bottom eject and have been very reliable. My favourite 20 guage is a little Browning BSS side by side with single trigger and barrel select that does not have choke tubes but is 3" chambered. You might want to look on the used market for a similar gun :)
Oh yeah --most pumps also have a "keeper" bar by the mouth of the magazine which if depressed allows you to empty the magazine without cycling the action -- that John Browning was a genius!!!

Thanks Dan,
Shivasirons sent me that exact link last week and I found a few springs I needed. Some parts were not available like the other parts store, but I think the springs is what I needed anyway.
