Rotary Cutter looking at a brush hog, I need advice

I used Grade 5 bolts. I think they are used because of how cleanly they snap, or break.

I had the same question about shear bolts and how universal they are. After digging around in some manuals I am pretty sure my cutter uses a Grade 2 (no head marks) 1/2-13 x 3" bolt. There is nothing special about that bolt, it is just a grade 2 bolt of that size that I can buy at the local farm and home store, correct?

That is the exact bolts I use on my 5ft. OKsparks that 8n will need an overrunning clutch with any cutter you get to stop the blade momentum from pushing that tractor. Get a friend that knows what he is looking at and go check it out if it is close, bring a wrench to check the gearbox oil.

Yes, that is correct. I do better with a 4" bolt so I can add some safety wire or ruin the threads on the end so the nut will not back off.

Flewism, that's a great point. The 8n I bought already had a orc installed. I'm definitely a newbie, and don't know a lot when it comes to tractors, but I'm trying to be smart and research as much as I possibly can. In fact I think I learned what a orc was from a past thread from tractorbynet when I was googling what live, independent, and transmission driven ptos where? This place is great for learning. As far as working on this brush hog if I do decide to get it. I work with tools every day to put food on my table, I'm not to worried about getting my hands dirty. However I'm not a type of person that has to much pride, and like getting advice from people who know more than me. So thank you everyone, I haven't decided what I'm going to do.

Just to clarify, I wasn't trying to be pompous. Just saying I know I have alot to learn. And with that said I'm not new to tools or safety. Just didn't want to put a wrong impression that I'm a desk jocky, (nothing wrong with that, alot of times wish I was). I just know most of ya'll know way more than i, and I have along way to go. I appreciate all the info and need it. Thank you again for the help!
