I pulled the tractor into the basement to begin to go over it and to see if the brakes could be adjusted. I found that there were no more adjusting that could be done, so decided to have a look at the brake shoes. The right side was full of oil, the left side was dry but shoes wore down. Ordered a brake shoe kit from Hoye Parts. Right side oil seal was bad, replaced it today. Drained hydraulic oil and pulled the strainer to have a look at it, it was fairly clean. I thought I would flush with diesel before filling with new hydraulic fluid.

Went to look at the YM169, one thing I noticed was it seemed to be a little hard to start. If you pull out the decompression rod the engine would spin freely then push it in the engine was hard to turn over almost like the battery was down or starter was dragging. I checked battery and it was fully charged about 15 volts. any ideas on why engine turns slow under compression. It would start if I decompressed engine and then back under compression.

A little late replying.

Did you check the engine oil? Too thick of an oil grade would make starting hard. Sure some of the Yanmar 2-cly diesels manuals mention that SAE straight 30W could be used.

Lastly, with the engine off, did you check the cooling belt. If it's super tight, starting will be hard. Sure the belts needs to be on snug with no slipping, not super tight that the engine has to work so much harder.

I think it is the starter, it spins freely and then starts to drag, I am going to replace it. I changed the hydraulic and engine oil today while waiting on the new brake shoes.

Well the little 169 has brakes now, The new shoes had to be fitted a little so they would close enough to go into the brake drum. The little tractor needed some fresh oil and other things to make it happy. I can tell I will have to mow in high 1, any higher gear will only bog down with a finish mower, low 3 will be pretty slow.

After working on the Yanmar 169 installing new brake shoes, a few days latter I happened to see one of the little ring clips that hold the adjusting cams into the cover along with the shoes, laying on my work bench. Needless to say the adjusting cam will probably slide out at some point while using the tractor, so I will need to take the cover off and slide that clip in place. I am glad I saw the clip on the bench, otherwise when the cam came out I would have never known what happened to the clip.

Have the YM 169 all back together, and put a six foot scrape blade behind it to go over the driveway. The 169 is very small and light in the frontend, the six foot scrape was all it wanted, and needed weights on the front to hold it down. I am more accustom to a heavier tractor, but this 169 is still a strong little tractor. If anyone would be interested is it, I will make someone a good deal in it.
