Yanmar 1510 2wd, Kubota BX1860
I recently purchased 2.5 acres in MA. It's not flat, but it's not steep either. Primarily, I will need a mower for this summer. In the future, I will want a FEL for snow removal (or possibly a snow blower), but the FEL could be handy for general landscaping use. I would probably want a tiller (if I can get enough rocks out of the soil to use one) to make veggie gardening a little easier as well. I had been looking into small JD and Kubotas, looking at specs and options and attachments, just so I could have an idea of what I could expect when I was ready to buy.

Well, I decided that ready-to-buy was this past week, so I started looking more closely at prices and used tractors. And, I happened across the tractor mentioned above: Yanmar 1510, FEL, tiller, weight box, and he's throwing in a trailer to transport it on (which is great since I don't have one). He's asking $5500 for the whole lot.

I went to see it today. I should say that I grew up on a small farm in Ohio and have never used a "real" tractor that was this small. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif A WD-45 was our little tractor. Anyway, the Yanmar appears to be in fine running order. Whoever attached the FEL (a Koyker 110) screwed together the hose fittings so you'd have to spend some time with a wrench and hydraulic fluid to get it off. The tiller has sat unused for the last year or two.

A few questions: I counted three hydraulic connections from the tractor to the FEL. One from the bottom of the engine area. One from further back on the chassis. And one from under the seat. The connection under the seat is visibly loose, yet fluid is not leaking (during FEL operation or otherwise). What is that third connection for, and how worried should I be that it is loose?

The tiller, as I said, is relatively abandoned. That's just a gearbox and maybe a couple of bearings that need grease, and assuming that it worked a few years ago, it should be ready to go again, right?

The hour meter on the tractor appears to be stuck at 700. The current owner said he replaced the "clutch/drive shaft last year" (well, his local JD dealer did it for him). Any idea how long (hours) the tractor should have lasted before that needed to be replaced?

If I want to start this in really cold weather (0-20 deg range), is there a way to plug in the glow plugs?

Lastly, any comments or suggestions?

Is this a 1510 (2wd) or a 1510 D (4x4)?

1510 2WD. How much of a problem is it going to be to operate the FEL with 2WD?

Roonabeck,

It's a decent price for a good running tractor with a FEL and tiller plus the extras.

A FEL on a 2 wheel drive tractor is also ok. You just have to watch the amount in your bucket and counter balance the tractor, and it is way better than no FEL. It is better with 4WD but not absolutely necessary. If you do purchase the outfit, I would change the gear lube in the tiller and it should be fine. I have had a few that sat for years and operate perfectly with a little service performed before hand.

The hydraulic hose that is loose but doesn't leak is probably the return line hooked into your hydraulic reservoir...if it were under pressure it would leak severely.

Thanks for the info. Every hydraulic implement I've ever used had 2 hose connections, so why the third one for this loader? Or is that common on loaders that have a hydraulic control for the bucket?

It has to do with the power beyond that has been discussed in earlier posts. The fitting under the seats are usually sealed with orings top and bottom and may seem loose but it is usually just pivoting on the orings.

Ronnabeck,
do you think you'll use this tractor in the spring or winter in MA? If so, I'd encourage you to find a 4x4. With the mud, ice, snow, etc. we get here you'll find that you might just need the 4x4 a bit... I agree its a fair price for a tractor with a FEL... good luck -art

And heck..... if you have no use for the tiller, i might be willing to take it off of your hands !

I do expect to use it in the winter (hence the question about being able to plug it in for cold-weather starts). And my wife has her eye on the tiller (do tillers work in MA's rocky soil?), so I expect to use it in the spring as well. I feel like it's unlikely that I'll be able to get a similar setup (tractor, FEL, tiller, mower, trailer) that includes 4WD for less than $10k. So perhaps I should get this, and use it for a few years while I keep my eye out for a 4WD with loader? Then I'd have 2. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

For what it's worth: Last year I paid $ 5,500 for a 1500D (4x4) with Koyker 110 FEL, 4' box grader and 2' 'scoop'. Private purchase, just down the road from me. This is in the Twin Cities area, MN.
