What brands of hogs are you looking at? Woods? Bush Hog? Land pride? Some like flails. I have a small 42" flail but don't use it as much as the brush hogs, just too small.

What are you trying to cut? Weeds? Brush? Saplings? What type of ground, hilly or flat?

With flail mower cutting 1" saplings it would require hammers rather than knives. I am not crazy about flails on saplings, I think they are more of a finish/ trim type mower than a brush mower. I would go with a Woods, Landpride or Bush Hog. You might want to do some searching here on TBN, there are quite a few brush hog threads. I would go with a heavier duty mower for saplings, but standard duty might be okay if you are going to then mow every year.

I cut a lot of property (neighbors) that has 1" size trees and larger brush. Brush hog is the way to go - any decent unit will do 1" stuff without much drama. I used to use a 7610 (smaller Kubota) and a light duty 4' brush hog and never had any problems or issues if I stayed around 1". I now use a med duty 6' unit on a MX5100 and never even pay attention to stuff that size.
Also look around for used stuff , you often see good functioning units that are not pretty but are mechanically sound for a very reasonable price! Good luck
