Hi,

We will soon begin a rebuild of a Perkins A3.152. Once the engine is built, it will be sitting waiting for us to remove the Standard 23c from our MF 35, 9 we are still using the tractor , so one will come out and the other will go in....) before it finds its new home, and before we start it. My question is what kind of good quality assembly lube should we use when we put it together?

I have heard too many horror stories of people using the wrong kind, and using way too much, and as a result plugged an oil pump , or severly starved the bottom end on that important first time start up?

Thanks in advance

Take care

Dear WilliamBos,
I own a three car mechanics bay (Shell station) and am a certified mechanic. We never use anything in our oil pump/take up assemblies other than good ole plain petroleum jelly (from Walgreen's). Works like a charm. Make sure to get it good and packed in. Done it hundreds of times, never a problem.

Assembly lube is better than nothing, but it really isn't a good substitute for priming the oil system prior to startup, especially on an engine that has sat a while after rebuilding.

I have used many different assembly lubes (lubriplate, STP, grease) but I think it's better to just use motor oil and prime the system immediately before startup.

If you have machining services at your disposal, you can make an adapter that takes the place of a spin on filter or tap into an oil gallery if there is a plug on the exterior of the engine. You can also make an adapter from a spin on filter by drilling holes in both sides of the filter (clean and dirty) and epoxying tubes in place. Then use a clean pump-up (garden type) sprayer to pump oil to the two sides of the filter, one side at at time. On the clean side, oil will flow through the engine--pump enough through that it reaches the valves. On the dirty side, unless there is a check valve in the main oil supply line, oil will flow backwards and prime the pump. Don't forget to put on a new filter.

Then when you start, it has already been lubed and will have oil pressure immediately.
