Looking for a good Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

Wow hydrostatic , I wonder if I could talk my wife into about another $1000 for lawn equiptment? I think I'll buy it, and ask her later. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Got any empty rooms down there Bird? No really does sound interesting, but I'm just looking for something for part time use. I've got too much stuff now, but I found I do need a self-propelled mower to mow my banks. Just need one that will last more than a week. Thanks again

I bought this @ Home Depot last summer for ~~ $150-160... summer clearance sale... certainly worth that... but not the original $489.... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Somebody had found a new Honda mower for ~~ $199. (do a search on TBN recent threads) and that's a steal! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The model you mention 917-37779 is the Honda with the blade brake, rear drive. It sells at Sears for 499.

You may want to consider a Lawn-Boy They are rear wheel driven with a belt type system which is smooth engaging not grabby. And if you get one get the 2 stroke engine not the 4 stroke. Very well built engine and plus you will never have to change oil. The 2 stroke is especially good for banks and such because you don't have to worry about a lack of oil to the right parts from mowing alot of hills. I see very few of these in the shop. I have had a few for Carburetor leaks but that was a few years ago. I have actually seen more Honda mowers than Lawn-Boys (Mostly due to neglect) I think the Lawn-Boys take more punishment. I bought one myself a few years ago for about $349.00 and all I have had to do to it is change the plug once and sharpen the blade.

I have a slope down to the creek that I can't currently get to with anything other than the weed eater. Its alot of work climbing up and down the hill, but if the mower was self propelled it might be easier. Do these things have a reverse?

I haven't seen one with reverse but mine has an OHV with a oil filter like you would have on a car. It has full pressure lubrication (4 stroke) so slopes etc. are not a problem. Also has the blade brake.

Man, I wish I could run onto one of those deals now. The JD & Honda are on my list to look at. Unfortunely Home Depot is not around here yet. I've heard rumors that one is coming. I hope so, it would give Lowes a run for it money. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the info on the Lawn-boy. I have them on my list to look at. I'm just not sure I want to mix gas for a 2 stroke engine for my lawn mower. I do see your point about the hills. It great to get insight from someone who fixes them. Thanks again.

I'm glad to hear that the JD has a way of keep the engine parts in oil on slopes. Does it have an oil pump, or how is it done? Also I'm concern about the drive system on any type I would buy. I'm going to really look at the way things are put together. Thanks again.
