I'm in the market for a middlebuster and subsoiler. I like the idea of the combo unit and I've seen several that may do the job for me. Of course, I'm looking for the best unit for the job. Most of the work would be on Food Plots in Georgia red clay. Digging ditches, laying wire and pipe are certainly not out of the question.

I really like this one from LMC (Lowery manufacturing).

I like the fact that it's a trailer mover as well. It also looks like it would shear without damaging the plow. Does anyone have one? What's the price?

I also ran across this one from Northern Tool under the Nortrac Name. Does anyone know who makes it? This isn't a combo tool, but it's adjustable and the shear point looks right to me. I wonder if you can buy the subsoiler tool point?? I worry that theres no gusset where the two pieces of tubing join.

What do you guys think?

TSC sells/has sold variations on the one pictured on the bottom. That is where lots of us got ours for something like $140. For what we use it for? It's perfectly suited and a bargain.

The top photo obviously represents a higher class unit and the price will reflect that. It isn't unusual to find any implement built/priced at low, medium, to pro line.

Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer choice.

I called the closest Northern Tool and asked them about their middlebuster. Apparently, this is the same one offered by Gearmore and Rankin out west. Northern didn't have one in stock, but they seemed to be willing to get one shipped to the store at no cost to me. They don't offer a subsoiler bit like Gearmore and Rankin. Does anyone know the hole spacing of the subsoiler bit? I'm just wondering if I can order one from Agri-Supply or maybe Gearmore or Rankin.

Now that I think about it. Maybe I could buy the Subsoiler and buy the furrow blade. Does anyone know the correct one?

The bit spacing on my Rankin is 2 1/4"- I'd be interested in a plow spade that fit as well.

If it's 2-1/4", I bet this would work!!

FURROWER 16 X 4.75MM - Agri Supply

Now to find the subsoiler point. Can anyone help?

I use that very same blade for a potato plow on this subsoiler:

It works okay bolted directly to the subsoiler, but the angle is a little shallow. The last time I used it I tried putting a 3/4" stack of washers between the aft bolt holes, between the plow and frame, to give it a steeper angle. This worked much better. It worked so well that I plan to make a wedge shaped adapter for future plow work.

I still need to make a "fuzed" top link pin so it will shear out before I rip something off the back of my tractor (or wind up riding the hood) next time I hit a big root. It stops in a real hurry.

I called Agri-Supply about the one below, but the lady I spoke to didn't know much. She couldn't even tell me the bolt hole centers. This one looks very similar to the Northern tool Middle Buster blade.

FURROWER 12 X 4.75 MM - Agri Supply

I spoke to a guy at Rankin and he said the furrower was a 12", but he quoted me a price of $30.

I wish someone knew for sure that it would fit. Even if it didn't, I bet I could come up with an adapter.

As mentioned the cutting angle of the middlebuster, and subsoiler sold at TSC, etc. are different as are the depths they are capable of working. The subsoiler will go much deeper, but it looks like you would need a fair sized tractor to lift it out of the ground. If I remember right the pins were darn near 25" high from the cutting tip.

I like walking the "yard" at Agri-supply... "found" this potato plow for $95(+/-?) thought it was a good price... the same item came as a subsoiler (thought it was the same angle but not 100% sure) - It's NOT listed online... it's adjustable (main bar can drop an extra 6" (+/-)). I went back and they were out of these but actually had more subsoilers... I need to see if I can buy (or get built) just the chisel part... I think the holes were around 2" apart. Item#73411, call your local Agri-Supply and see if they have one???

(in my best Ed McMann voice) Sir, yes, you are correct, yes!

I had to pin the top link to the bottom hole on the transmission bracket and shorten the top link to get enough ground/blade clearance to drive across our field without pulling up divots.
