Looking For a New Digital Camera

I like Nikon. Spent years with Nikon SLR's, and using Nikon microscopes at work.

We take a lot of pictures in the lab I am in; we have a Nikon CoolPix S9300. It works out really well.

One thing to consider, is some point and shoots, have wireles capability now. Download pictures without using a cable or removing the memory card...

Somone posted about using an Iphone; I use my Android phone camera, but I have not seen a phone with as good of optics and flash as the mid grade point and shoot camera's. OK for snapshots, but...

I like canon because it sequentially numbers the pictures. My old nikon digital didn't, and it was very easy to overwrite pictures with the same name. I don't like or want to have to use a program to move pictures. I put the SD card in the computer and copy them over. I also use Irfanview to rename the photos. It has a batch rename / conversion utility that can pull the date of the picture and put it in the name. You can also add text to quickly find with a search. I then arrange all my pictures for a year together in one directory. I also use my phone more and more, it's got a great camera built in.

We have two digital Nikons, my P700 DSLR and a Nikon CoolPix P300 I got for my wife. I have to say that the P300 takes some seriously good picures for a point and shoot. The newer model is the CoolPix P310. Very good low light sensitivity (f 1.8), HD movies, good zoom capability from wide to long. I love the wife's camera so much I am considering getting the P310 for a walk around / backup camera to my D700. At $270.00 or so (plus whatever sized memory card you get), it might be more than what the OP wants to spend, but I've heard very good things about the less expensive CoolPix's as well.

Transferring images off the camera is a simple as using the provided cable to connect to the USB port on a computer and it shows up like any other drive, no specialized software needed.

The very best digicam I have is a long range zoom Fuji Finepix S1000 10 mp...purchased it four years ago and for the life of me I don't know why anybody needs more than 10 mp for anything unless they want a wall sized print. Yet the newer models of the same basic camera have something like 16-18 mp....overkill, IMO

rechargeable AA or AAA battery power
A good cover for the lens (last camera it dinged up immediately)
about 10MP
SD card
STANDARD micro USB connectivity (no having to find the one special connector)
60 second or so video.

Any suggestions?

You can use lithium batteries, but I use 4 rechargeable AA batteries, and have a spare set (so far have never needed to change during the day).

Videos are limited to 29 minutes, so it'll far exceed your specs.

And yes, I do use the USB connection to transfer photos and videos to the computer.

I paid $239.99 for it at Best Buy plus $19.99 for an 8Gb SDHC card.

Now that's another matter.:laughing: I think you'd stretch that pocket all out of shape if you tried to put this camera in it.:laughing:

The prblem with many digitals is that tehy are fragile in many ways, and any moisture can become a real issue, this could even be from condensation, hot into a cold area,and more often than not cold into a warm house. Drop one and it can also ruin your day. I shoot professional out door images,and use an SLR. But for my trout fishing days, wading in the creeks, and typically raining more often than not(Best time for trout) I ended up using an Olympus Tough series camera. waterproof to 33', shockproof from 6', crushproof to 220LBS, and freeze proof. I am sure it has everything ya need to download as they all do now. I don;t use there software as I shoot nikon, and perfer using other software mostly for my filing. Its just a durable camera for a reasonable price, I ran it under the kitchen faucet when I first got it, and its been dropped and beat around,and still works like a champ. I also like that I can just tap the body on different sides to bring up different funtions, such as flash on or off,or macro with out having to use the buttons, although you can use them too. Its hard to be brand loyal for a throw awaymore or less.

We have a Canon A1100IS which fits the bill (depending on your lens cover requirements). We got it a couple of years back as the DSLR, a baby and a diaper bag were difficult to lug around and it has been rock solid. Looks like the current equivalent is the A1300. IMO, for indoor shooting the 1100 will rival the DSLR (Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi) as the "package" 18-55mm lens is too slow to use in low light without a flash.
