Looking for a track loader. What is undercarriage?

I picked up a CAT 931C 15 years ago for 13K. Was a good machine and I ran it for 10 years doing farm cleanup. Sold it for 10K.

Point is, you can probably find something for odd jobs around the farm in the 10-15K range that shouldn't be a financial disaster. The problem with 6K machines, is you get to a point where they are worth more scrapped out for parts.

Once you get past CUTS, you need to be brave, not faint hearted, lucky, and mechanically inclined with some degree of mechanical sympathy.

All of the above, and used construction equipment is fun and the best way to get you work done.

But on t he other hand.....you just have no idea.

I'd probably steer clear of an old piece of junk steel track machine if you're broke. If you're not broke throw out more than 6k and get a better machine preferably with wheels.

A friend owned a pretty old dozer. Couple of mechanics kept it running around the farm for a real experienced operator. Price of scrap was high and his kid was getting out of school and having a party. Wife said to get rid of it, and it was gone. Several years later he leased a D6 and sold it to the operator after lease was up.

Put another $20,000 with your $6000, and you MIGHT get a somewhat reliable/usable machine.
Been there .....Done that!

Hope he got something.... you're replying to an 11 year old thread! :)

He got something:

A big "thanks" for talking me out of a used $6000 track loader. I especially liked ThatGuy's comment about the happiest days of owning a dozer is the day you buy it and the day you sell it. Instead, I bought a Clark Michigan Payloadermodel 125-ADC (Series II). An older machine, but seemingly well maintained. I am looking for manuals for this machine. Any suggestions? Thanks again.

Yeah, once in a while I'll be searching for something in TBN, and see a blast from the past and re-read it. There's some real good stuff on here!

You've recieved excellent advice.

You will only find a project machine for $6,000. Parts alone can easily cost more than that when it breaks down, and IT WILL break down. All tractors wear out, but track machines are gonna be more expensive and more dificult to fix. One that cheap is gonna be very wore out and will need allot of care. <snip a lot of good info>
The day I sell my dozer will be a day of celebration!!!!

Rereading Eddie's enforced my commitment to get a dozer like my Dad did.
Back about 1963 we wanted the State of Vermont to build us a farm pond under some program they had. It was supposed to be small, about a half acre and 10 feet deep. The operator did a few days of work and then my dad got permission to run the dozer, which the operator left at the site, for a long weekend so he could "clean up a bit".
I don't think my Dad got out of the seat for 3 days but to eat, sleep, and defecate. We ended up with over an acre, max depth 14' and a little island.
