Looking for my first chainsaw: Stihl MS251 or Jonsered 2255?

The dealers can't make a lot on these saws. I always get flyers and the sale prices are nothing to get excited about. Makes you wonder if it even covers the cost of the flyers. Or they have some KIT, that includes a stupid hat or a pair of gloves with their advertising on them!

For one I havent heard or seen of a stihl 251 yet. But IF like a 250. It depends on the wood being cut.

The jonsered 2255 is a bigger saw at 55.5cc and is more on the likes of ms290 ms291. 2255 = husky 455

For trim cutting and small cutting for it lighter weight ms250 45cc.

I would choose stihl. I find that stills are easier to work on and get parts for.

I've had about 10 different saws and cussed at all of them until I bought my Stihl MS 250. I don't cuss anymore (at my saw).

The MS251 would be a good fit but like others have said, a MS261 would be a nice upgrade. I am not saying the MS251 would not perform just fine, think it would considering the description of intended use. Both would do the job. I am a Stihl man but I won't say anything negative about Huskys or Echos.

The more I read the more confused I get. However, I think I've narrowed down the attributes that are most important to me. 1) reliability 2) longevity 3) weight. I'm just unsure of the best way to get there. I think the Husq 455/2255 is out. They more I read about the Echo saws the more I like them. The CS-400 seems like a real winner in this price/category.

I think it depends on what you're going to be doing with the saw, and how much of it. Will you only be doing cleanup, no firewood and no felling? Get a 45-50cc saw. Some firewood, with bigger logs into the 12"-20" size range but also general cleanup? Get the 55-60cc saw, like the husky rancher, or its redheaded sister the jonsered. Best of both worlds is having a 50cc for limbing and a 70cc felling/bucking saw.

About brand, they're all good, but do you want to explain to all your friends why you didn't buy a stihl, and let them keep telling you that you should have? Personally, I don't think brand matters too much, but I probably wouldn't buy a non-pro saw. I LOVE my shindaiwa 488. It's a 48cc pro saw, just like an ms260. I bought it so cheap used I actually couldn't pass it up. So brand isn't everything, but I'm still pushing for the used pro model. You list reliability, longevity, and weight as major factors in your decision. All three of these go way up with the pro models. Obviously price does too, but I'd say it's worth it.

It think it depends on how much you will use the saw, if you are going to use it a lot I would go with the Stihl, all the new saws are a real Pain if they set around and are not properly maintained.
