Take offs are optional, landings are mandatory. I try to remember that when I'm in a plane.

Not sure. I've been talking to my sister, and texted My niece and her husbanc saying we're thinking of them, so the initial shock (?) is wearing off. He's beating himself up pretty badly about it.
He's been flying all of his life, and his father also had small planes.

I'm one of the crash statistics.
Had a total engine failure at 5000 ft. but was over a plowed 5000 ft .farmers field.
Glided in smoothly and executed a perfect 3 point landing and rolled all of about 40 ft.
Problem was the soil had been freshly tilled (aerated?) and my wheels sunk in and we flipped over.
Insurance paid off and I recuperated my bird and rebuilt it in my garage over the winter.
That was over 20 years ago and that aircraft is still flying today.

Also it earned me my mechanics ticket as I DIY'd all the repairs.

As I suspect you may already know: "Any landing that you can walk away from, is a good landing"!

A pilot up this way was flying a DEA agent around looking for pot plantations when the plane lost power. He found a small pond to land in and they crawled out of the halfsubmerged plane onto the wing; where he commenced to dance a jig. The agent looked at him and said “WHAT are you so happy about?”

“Because I’m :censored: Alive!!!!”

I've read about a number of single engine helicopter crashes that were caused by the pilots flying too low to auto-gyro. they didn't realize what happens at low altitudes when the engine fails I guess!.. and small planes need to have enough fuel in the tanks to make the trip!. I've read about that, too!..
