Hello,

I have a JD770 with rear hydraulics installed. A friend has offered to help me build a hydraulic splitter for firewood. Anyone have a design (or even a photo) they can share? Needs to be smallish so I can lift it with my 3 pt.

Thanks!

You need to look carefully at your hydraulic specs. I'm not sure how much gpm you can actually get through the rear hydraulic on a 770 but I'd guess it's pretty limited. I think you should stick with a 3 inch cylinder which will probably limit you to not much over 10 tons. Contrary to common wisdom, you can split a lot of wood with a splitter that size.

I've got a PowerHorse 13 ton on my 2320 and like it. However, if it wasn't a two way splitter, it would be a little slow. Take a look at that design. A two way would be a more complicated build, but with a small tractor, I think it's the best way to go.

I run a PTO splitter on my MT180D (about 20 hp).
Made it as 3 PT on an 6 x 8 H beam with a 5" old bulldozer cylinder.
I push logs into the wedge which is solid to the H beam end.
Slowish but fast enough for my liking. Sure beats a maul!
It can actually cut a 4" maple to length (cross grain) but U can see the H beam twist a bit and it cuts with a loud bang, but is a cool way to test my welding ability. LOL

Look at the Wallenstein 3PT splitters for design hints. Nice compact units and affordable. Might not be worth messing with building one.

Lets Split Wood!
Spending $1000 or more on a splitter doesn稚 save you money on your heating bill. MetKit customers asked for a cost effective woodsplitter kit so we came up with the 800S. Turn your CADDigger Model 821 (or other CADDigger) into a powerful woodsplitter.
The 800S was developed as the lowest cost way MetKit could offer a woodsplitter kit. Simply weld the frame together, put the boom cylinder in from your 800 Series CADDigger, and you have a 7 ton, 20 inch woodsplitter! Split 10 to 12 inch diameter, 20 inch long wood with the 12 second cycle time.
