I have the color display - model 01512 - and the display is BRIGHT. At night it looks like a TV was left on. I called Acurite and they said to just unplug it and the light will go out but it will continue to monitor with the back up batteries. That will work.
That's the one that I have and it is bright. There is a button on the back to turn the brightness down, with one of them being an auto-dim feature.

The next issue was the flashing blue lights on the internet bridge. Does anyone know how to stop those lights from flashing - it looks like there is an ambulance in the house?
Yeah, what the heck is up with those blue lights? Geez! Mine is actually downstairs in the mechanical room (where my router is) so it doesn't bother me.

My beef with all the stations I have looked at is that not one had a wind gust reading, and as far as wind goes that is all that matters because it is the gusts that seem to do the most damage.
My Acurite has a 'peak' on the display. I'm not sure what time-frame that gives, but should be close to what you are looking for.

I have an accurite station to install. How far away from trees and buildings does it need to be for them not to effect the station.
I don't remember if the instructions said specifically, but there is a lot of good information on Acurite's site.

Thanks, I will look into it. Man, seems you need to be some kind of IT wizzard, and frankly I just don't have much patience with that stuff. One problem leads to another that leads to another and another!Rather just go play in the dirt!

We have one internet connection coming in on the tower, it goes over to my neighbour via an Engenious link, then back to my house, because I can't see my own tower. That system has given us both grey hair. Now I have run coax the 500' from tower to my house with media converters, and that is working for me but not him. Really crappy throughput and we (more him then I) simply can't figure out the problem. So, anyway, what I am trying to say is I am a little leary about getting into something that is just too complex.

Setup isnt that bad. With a PC its almost plug in play. Basically its install software, hook dongle into display and plug into PC. "hacking" a router is just a cheaper standalone option rather than paying $200+ for Davis's standalone option, its not required/

My davis shows gusts when read on my PC. It also updates quite fast so the display usually catches the speed of any gusts if youre looking at it. It will display the 10minute average on the display too, but I agree it would be nice if there was a "10 minute max" as opposed to the daily max that it does.

The Davis Vantage Vue console does show both 2 minute and 10 minute max winds. If you are in wind mode, just keep hitting the WxCen button and it will cycle through. 10 minute max is the default view I use on mine.

I'm looking for another weather station my Acurite does not report hot temps correct. When it's 105˚ my Acurite says 116˚. On sunny days it's always high, I guess the internal fan cannot keep the thermal surface temp in check. Also my rain gauge quit working.

My Acurite outdoor temps are pretty close to a couple of analog temp gauges I have in the shade. The internal temp readings are higher than other thermometers in the house. The atmospheric pressure readings are ridiculously low. My rain gauge quit, but I found the cause was deposits left by birds roosting on the unit. A wire cage over it seems to have fixed that. I figure it is a handy toy, but not a precision instrument.

As I posted before Davis Vantage Pro2. It is a precision instrument. It keeps accurate temps even without the aspirated shield (assuming proper placement ie: not directly over roofing or hot asphalt)

Like alot of people I wasted money on cheaper units before biting the bullet. Yeah Im cheap, but the phrase penny wise, pound foolish comes to mind. I wasted several hundred before wising up and going Davis.

Just did my fall maintenance on my Vantage. All it consisted of was removing cob webs and pine needles from the raingauge. Just keeps chugging along like a timex. (knock on wood)
