what i'm looking for is basically a forum with an open-source attitude with people who have built their own units from scratch. i know that a build is likely to involve some tweaking and possibly rebuilding after the fact said:
Have you tried driveonwood.com? There are quite a few on that site that are building units right now including me. One of the easiest gasifiers to build (can be done almost in one afternoon) is the charcoal gasifier for running small engines and generators. there is a whole section on that website dedicated to charcoal. Please don't build a FEMA gasifier. They do work but are extremely touchy and need constant attention and exactly the right conditions in order to make clean gas so you don't ruin your intake valves with sticky wood tar.

i actually joined the site there a little while after i made the initial post here. ironically enough my initial plan was to build a fema / modified fema, but due to overwhelming posts advising against, i'm trying to sort out what numbers are hard and fast for an imbert based design. i'm not a paid member, mainly because i'm not at the point where i want to build a gasifier for vehicle power, and my understanding is that wayne's design isn't really scalable to my needs. at some point i hope to have the time to devote to building a woodgas vehicle, but it's not in the foreseeable future.

there's a lot of knowledge over there for sure, but what i want to get out the gasifier experience is far less than many of them expect out of their units. i get the idea that using woodgas is a way of life for some, but even if i were to end up with a flawless unit, i'd likely only fire it up occasionally. my current lifestyle wouldn't allow for it on a full time basis. i'm still hesitant to start because i have some lingering questions about dimensions, and i'd hate to build a prototype and find that i made an error that wasn't easy to modify and would relegate my material to the scrap bin - i've got a few good tanks to work from, but not enough to scrap a complete unit before i ever get it to work. i don't expect my first build to be perfect, but if i can get people to part with their dimensions i feel confident that i can make my first effort functional enough to learn from.
