looking
In advance - thanks so much! I have found a 1510d with a Koyker 80 FEL, finish mower, rake, box blade and 6x12 single axle trailer for $5500. Owner has had for 5 years and put 100hrs on it, previous to that 50hrs by another and previous to that reconditioned (???). No Rops. It also has a problem when driving the wheel will get violently jerked as if a front wheel is locking up and then frees up again. Any advice on buy or pass? Does wheel situation sound like the possibility of large problems or an indication of what I can expect in the next 100hrs? Unsure of where reconditioned. Also, is Yanmar the way to go for first tractor? Lots of scary reconditioning stories. Thanks to all.

The 1510D is a GREAT little tractor and I would heartily recommend it for a first tractor. The power shift is fantastic and the power is more than adequate. The refurbished aspect can be scary, but since this has a few hours after the refurbishing, it may be alright--check it out carefully and you should be alright.

The wheel locking up could be a real big and expensive problem. While the front end is not too difficult to work on, it does contain some parts that are costly. You can search under my name to find a thread where I had the front hubs apart. It sounds to me like there may be something broken in the one front hub. I would not drive it until I found out what and why. You really do not want to ruin more than is already broken. Something is not right for sure.

Possibility--if it were really cold it could have been a chunk of ice (water) in the hub? Push the top of the tire with your knee, if you get movement or a "clunk" sound it indicates looseness in the bearings and a potential problem.

I would not pass on it, but I would want to know what was causing the problem. You could drain the oil from that hub and see if you can find anything with a magnet.

That sounds like a good deal but the front 4wd parts can be difficult to obtain.

Does the problem occur both in 4wd and 2wd? If only 4wd, possibly mis-matched tire sizes.

I have contacted the seller again about the problem for more details and he is not a mechanic, but tried a few things. There is no noise or play when pushing on the tires while on the ground. He also tried it with the tires suspended by the loader and it's still tight. I did not ask whether it is in 4wd when it happens, but he did mention something about taking off the front driveshaft to try and eliminate the transmission. He also mentioned I should change diff fluids (I plan on doing all fluids). When driving straight ahead, the wheel will jerk out of your hands, but the tractor will power through and straighten up. He was thinking steering, but the steering looks pretty basic to me. I am a master ASE certified Toyota tech, but know NOTHING about Yanmar tractors. From the few pics I have found, I am imagining something like an older 4wd truck setup. ????Transmission with transfer case to a front driveshaft to the front diff. Is that correct and if so, what happens after there? Is it a solid type axle with internal shafts to each wheel? Is it an open diff in front (not posi)? Are the hubs intricate, or just tapered bearings? Any help, pics, advice is more than appreciated. I have not seen tractor and it is about 10 HOURS away, but he is willing to meet 1/2way. Does it sound too good to be true? Any other questions I should ask? Thanks to all!

First, the design is as simple as it looks. A countershaft in the transmission has a sliding gear/dog to engage the front driveshaft. Open differentials front and rear with a diff lock for rear only. The front hubs are complex but the effect is the same as front half-shafts driving the wheels. Take a look at the front hub diagrams on Hoyetractor .com. From what I read here, the hubs are likely the problem.

Sounds like you have some outer drive gears chipped or binding

I agree that it is probably in the hub on the side that pulls. You should be able to feel it if the front wheels are off the ground and just spin the wheel by hand. It is something broken or a bit if debris floating in there. I would not drive it any more at all until it is fixed. It would be a shame to damage something else in the hub.

From the parts diagram it is hard to tell what is going on if you have not had it apart and can therefore put things together, because there is an internal and an external diagram of the hubs. I will post them here as taken from Hoye's site. Basically you have a center king pin on which rides a gear cluster. This gear cluster transfers the power from the axle gear to the hub gear and provides a final gear reduction. If you pull the center pin (it is attached to the steering arm with a spring roll pin, the steering arm attaches to the bottom half of the hub with 4 bolts), then the lower half of the hub will drop. You can take the whole hub off by dropping the tie rod (and the steering rod if on left side) and 4 nuts on the axle housing.

I had mine all apart this past summer to replace the seals in the spindle shaft and tighten the spindle bearings. I will post pics of the parts, but you can read about it here.

One of the dealers that posts on this forum was talking about getting one of the internal gears made(#6 in the internal diagram). You can get all the pieces in this hub but they are not cheap.

One more thing. Do not expect help with rebuilding the hub from the service manual of the US equivalent 186D, as the front axle on the 1510D is very different.

It still is a good deal, IMO.

I have spoken to seller again and he sent 27 new pics for me last night. I am trading a nice Honda cruiser motorcycle for it and I don't know which one of us is more excited. As I told him, I don't mind wrenching on a 30 year old tractor, but am hopefull it is not too hard to find the parts that are bad. Cross your fingers for me and maybe I will just have to replace a few bearings. The trailer looks in very good shape (6x12) and will hold the tractor. The rest should fit in the back of the truck. Obviously not a new tractor, but pretty dry underneith - even the hubs. Hopefully that means they still have fluid in them (HA). Mower and box blade are yellow, but I didn't ask the brand. Both are still pretty shiny. I had planned on selling mower or trading for a tiller anyway. Rake looks useless to me, but who knows. I know NOTHING about tractors anyway. If anyone wants to hold a class, I could use the advice. One pedal on left - two on right - ??? Center gearshift with numbers and another next to it. Loader looks to have two handles. Have NO idea how to run 3 point. I'm sure seller can give me a quick class. Thanks for all the info so far, I'm under 10" of snow now, but hopefully I will have a new (old) tractor sometime soon. :D

I bought my 1510D back during the summer. They are small and light which makes them easy to hual but with good power. They are real work horses.

The pedal on your left is your clutch. The two on the right are your brake pedals. When you want to turn sharply, applying the brake on the side that you are turning makes it turn easier.

The 1510 has 9 forward speeds and 3 reverse speeds. It is setup as 3 forward and 1 reverse speed in each of 3 gear ranges. The shifter on the right selects your gear ranges. The shifter on the left of the gearshift shifts it into and out of 4 wheel drive.

The 3 point is raised by the lever to the right of the seat. The PTO has three speeds and is engaged with the lever to the left of the seat. First gear is forward from the neutral position and the second and third are back from the neutral position. All implements in this country are meant to run at 540 RPMs which is the first gear of the PTO speeds.

Can't tell you anything about the loader as mine doen't have one.

There is a bit of general information on the Hoye website about the 1510 that may help you get familiar with your new tractor.
