Yanmar 155d
Hi thanks I'm new here.... Guy in my town has a Yanmar 155d with loader, backhoe, and tiller. Tractor was rebuilt from ground up by him, as he's a small engine/little bit of everything mechanic at local machinery rental place. Tractor only had 330hrs, but previous owner let water get into exhaust and lock up motor.... Hence the rebuild. Has new tires all around. With these attachments and rebuild he's asking $5,500. I have a small acreage with most of tractors work going to be tilling/discing/plowing small to medium food plots for a business. He said when he rebuilt he turned up fuel pump and should be around 20hp vs 15 stock... Ideally I'd like a bigger unit but my budget is around $5,000 and with being basically a new unit and all the attachments it sounds like a good deal...? Any thoughts or suggestions? I know a guy that worked with him and he said he would have done a good job on the tractor, for what it's worth...

If he is a good mechanic that could be a good little tractor. Personally I like everything kept stock with stock settings. Do you know what it was used for and how good of condition is it in? Those were made in the late seventies so I am guessing the tires were replaced due to cracking being left out in the weather, so I'd worry about the hoses. Are they new? Important with as many hoses that are going to be on it including the backhoe's.

Welcome to the forum. :welcome: Sounds like a deal to me. I doubt it stays for sale very long. I don't understand trying to up the horsepower. the stock engine has plenty of horsepower to spin the wheels. Maybe going to race it? :D

You CAN"T turn up the fuel pump on these Yanmars. The guy is a total LIAR!!!

The backhoe is worth half that, alone.

That is an excellent price if it is as good as described and suitable for your needs.

These elderly ones are indestructible and about as simple as a Crescent wrench, there's not much to break, and cheap to fix.

I would do it.

You sure? My YM240 has a safety wire with a lead seal, on the governor. The wire is cut, I suppose from someone tinkering. I've never looked to see if (either) YM186D had that wire.

I have an adjustable throttle rod at the injection pump..I haven't tried, but I would say I can adjust mine for more fuel

These old YM governors have a limiter on them that is set to allow a maximum speed. I don't believe adjusting the throttle rod would give more fuel, it is usually adjusted to obtain idle speed and on ones without the kill cable it is adjusted to cut the fuel off for killing the engine.

I am not saying you can or cannot get more out of the pumps, I really don't know, but movement of the fuel rack changes the stroke of the plungers and therefore the amount of fuel being pumped. In my mind a properly operating governor and pump is going to supply all the fuel the engine can handle. More fuel is only going to cause more black smoke. This is just my theory, don't take it to the bank for a loan.

If the Throttle isn't opening the pump up all then way then sure it will give you more performance. Not necessarily HP.. HP comes mainly from Piston Cyl. Size, Stroke, Valves/Size, Cam etc. You can inject all the fuel you want in it. But you have to combust it. To much fuel with Lack of combustion= BLk. smoke.

I'd surely take a chance on it, as someone mentioned, the backhoe alone is worth at least half of the asking price. (I'd offer a little less, but if he didn't budge, then I'd take his asking price)

all that can be achevied on the yanmar pumps is advance, or ****** the timing by varying the shim stack under the pump, and a small increase or decrease in the "pop off" pressure of the injector, again by changing the shim stack in the injector..............the only way to increase power would possibly to fit a turbo ?

The stock fuel pump setup already puts out more fuel than the injectors can handle. That's why the need for the fuel return lines as in any fuel injector system. Increasing fuel output at the pump only means more fuel in the return lines.

Just my 2 cents but the YM155 is near 40 years old. At 330 hrs. on the meter that is about 8 hrs. of use per year. I owned a YM 155D and it was a tough little tractor.

I have a 155d and LOVE it. Just got a disk and flail mower for it. Know where I can get a "turbo" for it? A little more power would be great as I am looking into a wood chipper.
