Hi Guys,

I'm a recent TBN member, although I have tracked discussions here for a while. I am looking to buy the following NH tractor:

TC40D-4WD/Loaded R4s/16LA-72" HD Bucket
Reversable tooth bar and Welded Hooks
Grille guard
Dual Remotes
Engine Block Heater
48" Pallet Forks and Quick Attach
72 inch Bush Hog

I think I have a good grasp on a ball park figure for this setup from reading all of the prior posts by the group. I'm thinking it should cost about $24,185. Is that in the right ball park? How much should I be willing to move? I'm estimating $1750 for the bush hog and $750 for the forks (They quoted me $1850 for a 60 inch Bush Hog 285 last time I was in).

Right now I am trying to work with the closest New Holland dealer located in Tilton, NH - and they seem to be quoting WAY higher than the prices I have been tracking on TBN!! Perhaps they did not think I was serious, but I am planning another visit soon.

Has anyone here used MB Tractor and have you got a good deal? If not, any other suggestions of who may offer the best deal with the least amount of struggle. I have heard good things about MB and their service, and would like to use them since they are closest - but I would be willing to haul the tractor a distance for service to get the best price (within reason) if necessary since money is a little tight. They just built a huge building that looks like they put $$$ into, and I can't help but feel I might get raked over the coals to help finance their new fancy digs (I'd prefer a modest looking shop with decent prices!).

I will keep everyone posted on the best quote I recieve.

Thanks for the support!

You might try Chappel in Brentwood. It's off of 125 a couple of miles south of 101. I was looking at a TC18/24. My neighbor has been happy with the service from them. I felt they wanted too much, and the didn't want to sell me a NH.

Another TBN'r bougth his TC24 from Chappel and has had good service from them.

You might try Scanman(SP?) in Maine as another datapoint. They aren't too far out.

Hate to reply to my own post so soon (is this bad etiquette?), but I was wondering if I am better off negotiating for everything minus the forks, quick attach and bush hog. Making the list I present to the dealer:

TC40D-4WD/Loaded R4s/16LA-72" HD Bucket
Reversable tooth bar and Welded Hooks
Grille guard
Dual Remotes
Engine Block Heater

and offering $21,685 instead?

Unfortunately, negotiating these kind of purchases are not one of my strong points and I usually end up leaving empty handed - failing to understand how a dealer can pass up a sale at a fair price according to what others are paying. For this reason, maybe I'm better off making the deal as simple as possible and just concentrating on the tractor and immediate neccessities.

Thanks for the input (I can't believe how fast the first response came in - thanks for the suggestion of Chappel and the dealer in Maine).

I have read in previous posts that a good discount is 18% off of list - what is the total markup on a TC40D - with 18% off what percentage does the dealer take in for the sale?

Thanks again

I'll admit negotiating is not a strong point for me either. I received my TC24 from Corriher last thursday. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Chappel Tractor

I bought my TC18 from them. Not the cheapest price I've seen on tbn, but we always pay more in New England /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. My experience with Chappel has been A+. Ask for Ted in Brentwood.

You might try faxing offers to three local dealers and see who accepts. Name your configuration, name your price and fax it to three dealers. See if anyone accepts it or comes close to it. You might want to state that you are faxing it to other dealers on the cover sheet so they know they will be competing for your business.

Well, I made it back into MB yesterday. They quoted me $21,600 for a TC40 with Shuttle transmission, 16LA loader, 72" Heavy Duty Bucket with Quick attach, Loaded R4s, and Folding ROPS. They wanted extra for the grille guard, engine block heater and tooth bar.

Also was quoted $23,400 for TC40D w/16LA Loader and loaded R4s with nothing else!

I told them that was much higher than I have seen quoted elsewhere and the salesman said that was their no 'dickering' price. He said that the prices they quote are the lowest they can offer and if customers don't like it they can go somewhere else.

Spoke with them again today to see if they would move on price - and they did. They said the heavy duty bucket and quick attach on the TC40 was actually an extra option and they wanted $1000 more for it than what he said the day before! Even though the previous days quote was still too high, I asked if he would honor the price that he qouted me. He told me that he could not do that.

I mentioned to him that I spoke with one of his local competitors and that they had quoted me $1000 less than him over the phone without even stepping into their dealership. The salesman replied that that was an excellent price - and I told him that it was an ok price but by no means excellent. I then asked him if he could meet or beat his competitors price and he said again that they were firm on their price. He said they take their cost, add in expenses and then arrive at the price they are willing to sell at. So in response I told him that I understand and that after all, someone has to pay for their new fancy building. He replied 'That's a crock of ****, a lot of people say that - but it's not true' and went on to explain how efficiently they ran their business. I replied that if it was so efficiently run, why couldn't they meet the prices of their competitors - for which he had no reply.

At that point I knew I wouldn't do business with them. After bluntly being told that I was full of ****, while attempting to buy a $20,000+ piece of equipment from them was more than I could handle!

Even at that point I proceeded to ask them about their used tractors. I asked if they offered any kind of warranty or protection against a situation where I brought home the tractor and the next day the transmission dropped out of it or something - and was told they do not do that. Then I asked, what kind of service their used tractors are given. "Before I purchase a used tractor are the fluids and filters changed, is it greased?", I asked.

The answer I was given astounded me. I was told that their used tractors receive no service what so ever. They are purchased from a customer and dropped on their lot for sale without even seeing one second in the shop. Anything else that is done on the tractor is paid for by the purchaser!!! I have never in my life heard of any business that operates in that manner. When I asked whether used tractors are serviced before they are sold at other dealerships - I am usually given a look of surprise and told 'of course we do, we wouldn't let a tractor leave the dealership before being serviced'.

In any event, I am hoping that other TBNers in my area who are looking at tractors are made aware of how MB Tractor operates and does business - both with new and used tractors. I've already mentioned what has happened to a few people I have know who are looking at tractors and other equipment just to give them a heads up.

Now for some positive thoughts:
If I want to deal really local, Northwood Power Equipment is the best dealership I have ever seen. I have already had two demos on my property (something which MB Tractor will not do), and have dealt with several of the employees, including the owner, all who have been excellent and very helpful. They sell Massey Ferguson and Agco tractors, and although I really like the New Hollands better - I am very tempted to go red because of their excellent customer service and helpful staff. If MB Tractor was one quarter of the dealership Northwood Power Equipment is, they would have already rang up another sale.

BTW - if there are any New Holland dealers in the NorthEast (Within 300 miles of Concord, New Hampshire) that are reading this and are willing to give a decent deal on a new TC40D - please send me a private message, I'm looking for you!

wolfman,
I had the same experience with MB. A few guys say they were all right - I usually get along with everyone but the sales manager guy Dave something or other really rubbed be the wrong way. Quoted list for everything, same attitude of if you dont like it you can leave.
So I did, - ended up buying out of state from Connecticut.

you got the right idea, forget the NewHampshire tractor dealers - there are plenty of fine dealers who deserve and work for your money.

I looked at Chappel as well, nice guys, and if I had money to burn I would of bought from them. (3000$ more!)] /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

good luck

As noted in several previous threads, those of us in the Northeast will pay more for most everything related to the tractors. Be careful when comparing prices from someone who bought a tractor in Ohio or other area where prices are more competitive and there are just more dealers and choices.

I'm sure, as with most everything you buy, there will be someone who paid less.

My suggestion...pick your product, pick the dealer, and then work out the price that works for you both. You'll be happy in the long run.

Just one New Englander's thought /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
