Re: speed of PTO ... without a tach you don't know how fast it is turning unless you can count very quickly.

The common sense approach would be - is it turning fast enough to get the job done?

Boner, the top rpm, or wide open throttle, is just a couple of hundred rpm over "PTO speed" on just about every tractor I know of. On Kubotas without a tach, the recommendation is full throttle, then ease off just enough to hear the engine slow a bit.
