loose center pin on 422

( If you don't clamp the tabs to the ball, as long as the bolt won't roll, there are redundant lubricated turning joints at the inner and outer ball surfaces, and the ball itself shouldn't wear the tab(s) significantly )

Well articulated (pun intended), Charlie, my concerns no longer register on the scale. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

guys,
correct me if i'm wrong,i've never saw a machine made to wear out the frame.if that bolt is not tight that is the condition you will have.
as far as the grease between the bolt and the ball;i think it is just a cheap way to get the grease to the ball. they ground two grooves to let the grease out to lube the sockets
i still put super lube on them, better more than not enough.
i also noticed on the bigger machines they drill and tap for grease fittings right in the ball socket.
one other little note, it would be very cheap to weld new ends on that bar. to weld and bore the holes is a little more complicated.

As you observed before, and discussed with Terry, The bolt isn't supposed to roll in the frame. If it is lubed, it generally won't, even with minimal clamping force. It does have to be snug, however, and apparently you and some others had a washer left out.

The bigger machines use a different type of bearing, but again with grease between the pin and inner race and between the outer race and the housing. (On mine, I found a broken off zerk by pumping into the one you mention until a stream of grease came out of the bottom center of the pin. That one wasn't in the book - Terry told me about it. I have no idea when it was broken off. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif)

charlie,
maybe we are trying to make something perfect in an imperfect world.
on this machine when they tight as i could pull them i could turn the bolts with my fingers. it was just hammering it's self apart.

From your prior posts, that was when the threads were bottoming, right? They're not supposed to.
A couple of star type lockwashers might be just the ticket.

Perfect? Of course not. If they were perfect they'd probably reject you and me as operators. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Is the loose center pin under the metal covers? I sure would like a photo of the pin. My 422 does not have any washers under the nut for the front top pin.
Thanks to all

i noticed a lot of movement in the center pin area i checked bottom one and it was tight(1 13/16). so went to the top both were loose, so i tighten them.

I know this is an old thread but I want consensus on this bolt size. I have a 425 instead of the 422 but the center pivot pin/bolt is a 1-1/4 -12 stated in the parts manual.

Can anyone confirm that the correct wrench size for the nut on it is 1-13/16"? I am very sure that the bottom bolt is loose. I do not own a 1-13/16" wrench and I have no problem buying one as long as that is the correct size.

Any help would be appreciated.

I also need a good crash course on attaching pictures. I have lots of pictures to share but can't get them under 100K.... Need help
